22-year-old Alachua man faces two life sentences after jury conviction for first-degree murder

ALACHUA, Fla. – Lacorrin Raheem Calhoun, 22, is facing two life sentences after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery following a 2022 incident at One 51 Apartments in Alachua.

At about 6:40 p.m. on December 9, 2022, several callers reported multiple gunshots; other callers reported that someone had been shot at One 51 Apartments located at 15139 NW 150th Road.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes of being dispatched and located a male subject near building 15139 suffering from a gunshot wound to his left side. While the victim, later identified as 22-year-old Jaquan Robinson, was being transported to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by paramedics.

While officers and paramedics were attending to Robinson, a 911 call was received from a subject who said he was shot in the back. Officers found Calhoun suffering from a gunshot wound to his armpit area in the pasture adjacent to building 15139. Calhoun was transported to a hospital in critical condition and was released from the hospital a few days later.

The Criminal Investigations Division conducted several interviews with on-scene witnesses and persons of interest. After several interviews, it was determined that the incident occurred after Calhoun tried to steal marijuana from Robinson, leading to gunfire. During the course of the investigation, detectives identified Calhoun as the primary aggressor, and a warrant for his arrest was applied for and granted. Calhoun was interviewed at the police station in Alachua on December 22, 2022, and arrested on that date.

The trial, prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Ryan Nagel and Glenn Bryan, lasted five days, and the jury deliberated for a little over four hours before finding Calhoun “Guilty” of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. The jury found Calhoun “Not Guilty” of the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Calhoun had entered an open plea of nolo contendere to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon a few days before the trial on the other three charges.

On March 11, Judge David Kreider sentenced Calhoun to life in prison on the first-degree murder charge, a capital felony with a maximum penalty of death. Calhoun received a second life sentence for attempted armed robbery causing death, a second-degree felony with an enhanced sentence because Calhoun was adjudicated a habitual felony offender. Kreider also sentenced Calhoun to 30 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Calhoun’s attorney has appealed the conviction and the sentence.
