Alachua County Republican Party letter argues that City Commissioner Casey Willits’ actions escalated tension and hostility at School Board meeting

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County Republican Chairman Tim Marden has sent a letter to Gainesville City Attorney Daniel Nee, arguing that City Commissioner Casey Willits’s actions led to an escalation of the tension and hostility at the School Board of Alachua County meeting on July 31.

“Dear Attorney Nee,

“Be advised, in our judgment, City Commissioner Casey Willits directly contributed to the escalation of tension and hostility toward citizen Jeremy Clepper at a recent School Board of Alachua County meeting.

“During the July 31st Board meeting, Willits was standing at the podium, awaiting his turn to speak, when School Board Vice Chair Tina Certain asked him to wait while she asked deputies to remove Clepper from the public chamber for unspecified reasons. Certain can be heard saying, “Wait just a second, Casey…” at the 1:54:23 mark of the YouTube broadcast.

“Video evidence (1:55:12 mark) shows Willits, despite Certain’s request, yelling into the microphone and pointing at Clepper while saying, “Protect our board members, officers! Protect our board members!” 11 seconds later, Willits turns and hands the microphone to Faye Williams, who had been sitting behind him before she stood up and started shouting. Williams goes on to contend that the officers should “Put his ass out [of the chambers].” Williams even went so far as to assert that the meeting was “our meeting,” referring to herself and other Board supporters like Willits; she also called Clepper a “white supremacist.” By handing the microphone to Williams, who was already shouting, Commissioner Willits inserted himself into the situation and made it worse.

“Had this meeting erupted further, Commissioner Casey Willits would have been at least partially to blame. As it stands, action may still be pending. We continue to monitor the situation on behalf of Alachua County Republicans and recommend that you discuss and document with Commissioner Willits any potential personal and professional ramifications of his actions.

“Fortunately, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to defuse and de-escalate the situation after a recess was called.

“Sincerely, Tim Marden, Alachua County Republican Chairman”

Background (click here for our full article and the video clip):

During general public comment, about 30 people spoke in support of Chair Sarah Rockwell after she apologized for posting “One less MAGA in the world,” referring to the death of Hulk Hogan; however, the room erupted into chaos after a man who identified himself as Jeremy criticized Rockwell and other board members: “You know what you said, and you should step down.”

Vice Chair Tina Certain, who was chairing the meeting after Chair Sarah Rockwell handed the gavel to her because Rockwell is still recovering from surgery, told the next speaker, Gainesville City Commissioner Casey Willits, to wait because she was having Jeremy removed. Deputies approached Jeremy, who argued that he had the right to be in a public meeting, and the audience started jeering and telling him to leave. Board Attorney David Delaney advised against removing Jeremy, and Certain announced that he could stay. The audience began chanting, “Get out! Get out! Get out!” Faye Williams stood up and started yelling, “This is our meeting! Get out!” Willits handed her the microphone. Williams continued yelling into the microphone that Jeremy should be removed, including, “He’s a white supremacist, so put his a** out!”; after about a minute of yelling, the meeting went into a recess to restore order.

After a few minutes, it was announced that Jeremy could stay but was choosing to leave “so that we can continue with the meeting.”

  • Jeremy and the State of Florida and anyone who might have been affected… if you are reading this, please SUE the pants off the City of Gainesville for this!!

    • I was in the meeting room.
It was not clear why Mr. Jeremy approached the dias, near Ms. Rockwell, after his aggressive tirade at the podium and the shouting on the way back to his seat. Please provide Jeremy’s comments instead of ignoring his escalation of the situation. Contrast that to the other Pravachol supporter’s language.
Words matter and Jeremy got what he set out for, a spectacle.
Mr. Willits was concerned for the safety of the SB members because the ACSO did Not stand between Jeremy and the dias. I too found that disconcerting.
I agree Ms Williams was out of line in her behavior but that should not be blamed on Willits.

      • Guest – the attorney mentioned for Jeremy to approach.

Did Willits hand the microphone to Williams????

  • Willets is an elected official and should be held accountable for his outrageous behavior and for inciting others to attack a person who had as much right to be at that meeting as anyone else who was there. Many of the people there were supposedly upset because Rockwell’s right to free speech had supposedly been violated. Apparently they don’t understand Jeremy has a right to free speech too.

  • Casey Willits absolutely escalated the situation. He did so knowingly and deliberately and should be held accountable.

  • Willets the weasel stirring the pot again.
That should be of no surprise to anyone; we’ve seen his role in the continued pursuit of GRU profits.

  • Faye Williams should resign for accusing Jeremy Clepper of being a “white supremacist” and demanding his “ass” be thrown out. She makes a terrible accusation based on nothing except Mr Clepper is white, and uses totally inappropriate language. Disgusting and despicable. She shows an incredible lack of manners. She is an embarrassment to Alachua County.

  • Parents of potential new student enrollees in the ACSB system should be forced to watch the video of this meeting. Some might want to join the crowd shouting “get out,” so that their children can be suitably indoctrinated. Others might be appalled and realize that their children need to be educated in a better way through some alternative outside the control of the ACSB.

  • It’s almost like Willits is trying to sabotage the meeting

  • Marden should not talk. He wasn’t at the meeting. He is just trying to play politics.

    • That is literally his job. What do you think someone with the title “Alachua County Republican Chairman” does for a living?

      • anonymous, he’s a self proclaimed national officer in the far right John Birch Society and just may have a conflict therein. The JBS says that the Civil War was Lincoln’s fault – you know, as in the description of the Republican Pary as “The Party of Lincoln”. We all know now that the party has nothing in common with Lincoln anymore, but did I miss something and it is now officially the Party of Trump? That would be fitting

    • Everyone at the meeting but Marden – you do realize it was live-streamed, and you have no idea how many were watching that sh!t show!

    • Replying to the author of the post “Everyone at the meeting but Marden”.
The meeting was recorded with audio and video. It is unedited. An informed opinion can be developed based on the unedited recording.

    • Apparently you are saying he isn’t allowed to watch the video… maybe because he had to be elsewhere

    • Newberry has so many problems, this is just a diversion for him to draw attention away from the failures that are now coming to light. For example, hiring the former mayor as the city manager, without interviewing anyone else. They are going to spen $2 million on the baseball fields. I am fearful what they may do to these. Elementary school, when you know, or if they get control of it through the charter school system. I have a feeling it will be like the springs county issue and just die on the vine. I mean, he was elected to be the mayor of newberry, so why is he running around asking everybody else to resign? When he’s told people in the city of newbury to move out when he does not have the authority to do so. It’s almost bizarre. He really needs to be out of office and get someone in there who can get things done for the city.

      • What do we expect? He’s a self proclaimed “national officer” in the far right wing John BIrch Society.

        • At least he has a title and he does something other than troll news sites and be contrary. Just sayin’

          • Admittedly I spend too much time here Cure, but I run a business with yearly sales of $ .75 million to $1.25 million, make payroll every week and produce a product that isn’t just paper but keeps the rain off of people’s head and if you run into it, you’ll get f,,, up.

  • Casey Willits is an openly gay man. I am only stating the fact when I say this. These people have a flair for the dramatic and tend to be drama queens. Willis does his best to keep this true side about him under wraps, but this meeting he exposed himself for who he really is!

  • Yes Willits needs to held accountable for his actions. If the crowd would have attacked Jeremy Clepper then both he abd Faye Williams could have been charged with starting a riot. Now the Democrats are accusing Clepper of being a hardened criminal. Yet they easily forget the members of their own party and their criminal actions. Remember Chucky and the lame excuse of drinking cough syrup and driving (DUI). Rodney Long and his criminal past, George Floyd criminal acts and background but now tgey treat him as a saint. we could go on and on. These are all tactics to smear a man exercising his 1st Ammendent Right. How many times have democrats exercised their rights and said things to hurt people’s feelings. Madonna even wished the White House to be blown up. This is a feeble attempt by Democrats to cover their tracks and say nothing is going on here. Rockwell and Willits need to go. Faye Williams is a racist buffoon but thankfully not a elected official.

    • Dude, I know nothing of Jeremy’s past and don’t care, but your hero is a felon – 1st ever to be president – and lucky to not be in jail right now. Madonna is not a Democratic official of any kind, so unless you want to own the actions of anyone who claims to be a Republican, maybe drop that one. By the way Perry should be in jail for his dark FPL money he took in 2018.

      • Take your meds Jazzy. It’s going to get a worse for your whiney party. Democrats have learned nothing from the Harris loss and the misdeeds they have committed over the last decade. All you have going for you is the lame blaming of Trump for every little thing that goes wrong locally and nationally. From a raindrop to a commerical about jeans. The democrats are a dying breed at their own hand.

  • He was wearing purple, showing that he was a stooge of the anti-maga leftist mob in a premeditated way.

  • All this talk about gun control.

Willets just willfully gave his gun to someone else to do the shooting for him.

  • Willits is the former local director of the DNC office, no coincidence 🤡👿💩👺👹

  • Does Willits have children? Why are single 🏳️‍🌈men so interested in public schools?

  • Willits is an asshole…”why should we listen to anything he says?”…
The left is full of hate…

  • A lot of people hiding behind the face diapers in the photo…the commi flag.
    🐽😷 mental illness…

Remove your mask! , the fear is not real!

  • Several in attendance – including Jeremy, Willits, and Williams – should have been removed and if possible, banned from future county public meetings for a time certain.

That Marden and the state GOP want to be selective about which loudmouths get called out while trying to milk this issue about an off the cuff, long since retracted and apologized for comment with a pledge to do better from an official with a history of selfless service to the schools and kids, isn’t surprising. The selective outrage from the party of Trump cultists is predictable and speaks volumes about their willingness to work with others and move forward, but instead prefer begging their Tally master to remove yet another elected Democratic official, so they can avoid local elections. .

    • Those here – apparently most – who think this is a real audit, despite the governor telling us it was a political stunt, need to see the next target – blue St Pete – and the letter aimed at political issues, not bookkeeping ones.

“The City of St. Petersburg is the next target of the state of Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts.

In a nine-page letter dated Aug. 1, state auditors say that among the programs the city has implemented that they want more information about are those addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion; transportation; homelessness; and the environment — or, as described in the letter, “The Green New Deal.”..”

This is typical partisan attacking of local perogatives pretending to be about corruption. You’re being taken for a fool if you think it’s the latter.

By the way, as per Gainesville’s Ward, their mayor said bring it on, our books are open.

    • This is a letter to the City Attorney regarding a City Commissioner. The other two are not elected officials, so they don’t have to answer to the City Attorney for their behavior.

  • Good Grief ACSB! If it isn’t the City of Gainesville and all of Cynthias shannangan’s, it’s Dr Doolittle and DoNothing. Fire everyone and start from scratch. Otherwise get comfortable with the bottom feeders and keep VOTING!

    • Flandering about – I have said we need to get rid of ALL the so-called leaders in Alachua County and the City of Gainesville and get all new members.

  • There’s an old saying: “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

Well some of you folks have rewritten it.

“It is better to remain silent and be thought a BIGOT than to speak and remove all doubt”
