City of Gainesville officials to host official promotion ceremony for chiefs Jones and Scott

Press release from City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – City of Gainesville officials will host a promotion ceremony honoring outgoing Chief Tony Jones and Chief Lonnie Scott in their new leadership roles.

When: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, July 25

Where: Blount Center at Santa Fe College, 401 NW 6th Street

The Honorable Walter M. Green of the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Florida will swear in Chief Scott as the next chief of police of the Gainesville Police Department.

Chief Scott’s 37-year career in law enforcement includes working in and supervising every component of a law enforcement agency from administration to patrol. He was a member of the original Community Oriented Policing Team at GPD and assisted with the design and implementation of the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. Under his leadership, GPD has excelled in developing community partnerships to assist with neighborhood problem identification and resolution, resulting in improved community relations and crime reduction.

The ceremony also will honor former GPD Chief Tony Jones who has been appointed as the City’s special advisor for juvenile justice and community support programs. He served as the department’s police chief from 2009 until his appointment as the City’s chief operating officer in January. He also served as interim chief from 1996-1997, and was promoted to progressively responsible roles since joining the Gainesville force in 1975. He will continue to impact the reduction of gun violence and develop effective intervention programs for at-risk youth and young adults.

The event will be recorded for future broadcast on COX Cable Channel 12 and will be archived on the City of Gainesville website.

  • What was that stuff about Reichert house and
Their accounting problems and then that great city auditor had to leave? Should we get
Rid of our k9’s like what Lonnie Scott wants to
Do & replace them with those robotic dogs that
    Can be fitted with guns?

  • There’s a lot of black on black crime and shootings
Recently…tony Jones and Lonnie Scott have done
    A great job with that.

  • Ceremony for the Biggest Loser? Law and Order is the apparent Biggest Loser . What a shameful COP owned by the LaLa Land Gainesville City Commsisioner we have. Best of Luck with this regime. Sheriff Brady Judd is what Gainesville needs to get back on the road to a safe community.
