Dream on Purpose opens enrollment for all youth, ages 11-18, for 8-week film program

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Dream on Purpose is hosting “Filming with a Purpose,” an immersive, eight-week after-school program, dedicated to exploring the topic of youth gun violence under the supportive guidance of a mental health counselor, while learning about film production – all for FREE. 

“Filming with a Purpose” is funded in part by One Nation, One Project—a national project in 18 cities chosen by the National League of Cities. Gainesville’s focus in the project is preventing gun violence and promoting youth wellness through arts and cultural programming. Dream on Purpose is one of six organizations to receive funding as part of phase two.  

WHEN: Virtual informational sessions are being held on January 27, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.; January 29, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.; and February 2, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom. However, “Filming with a Purpose” will officially launch on February 12, 2024, and end on April 12, 2024, with a community-wide screening scheduled for April 21, 2024, at 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: The informational sessions will be held via Zoom; however, the daily after-school program will take place at the North Central Florida YMCA, 5201 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32605.

WHO: This program is brought to you by Dream on Purpose and funded by One Nation, One Project GNV, an initiative of the City of Gainesville. Additional program partners include Mimi Culpepper, LMHC, CPC, MCAP, CCTP; Deliverance Pictures, LLC; Motion Sparks Action, LLC; Mirror Image Leadership Academy; Mayah Baptiste; Patrice Quetant; Kendall Kyle; Joshua Cornelius; and Skyler S. Kern.

    This is not free; the Gainesville taxpayers pay. How will any willing children get to the NW side? Somehow, I can’t picture drug dealing gangbangers being interested in talking with a mental health counselor nor being interested in making movies. And all to eliminate or reduce ‘gun violence?’
