Gainesville man arrested on DUI and other charges while on probation for DUI
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jamar Akeem Williams, 35, was arrested early yesterday morning on DUI charges, along with fleeing law enforcement and driving on a permanently revoked license.
At about 4:20 a.m. on March 23, Williams was allegedly driving a car that pulled out of a private roadway onto West University Avenue and coasted for about two blocks, forcing other vehicles to swerve around his vehicle because of its low rate of speed.
Gainesville Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop and approached the car on foot from both sides, but after one of them knocked on the window, the car sped away, nearly hitting other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. The car reportedly narrowly avoided hitting a patrol vehicle and abruptly turned into a parking lot at 1105 NW 3rd Avenue, where it took a wide turn and nearly clipped a parked car. After the car parked, officers ordered the driver out of the vehicle.
The arresting officer reported that the driver, later identified as Williams, was “very argumentative and disrespectful” and refused to acknowledge that he understood his Miranda rights. The officer reported that Williams said the officer was trying to kill him and that he was being arrested because he was black.
The officer reported that Williams’ speech was “slurred and mumbling,” and he smelled alcohol on his breath. Williams allegedly refused to provide any information about himself and refused to perform field sobriety exercises.
The officer reported that an open bottle of alcohol could be seen on the driver’s side floorboard.
The officer transported Williams to GPD Headquarters for a breath test and asked Williams his name. Williams allegedly said it was “Jayy Williams” and then said his name was “Michael.” He was eventually identified using internal databases.
When the officer requested a breath sample, Williams allegedly “danced around the chair he was provided”; when the officer asked again, “again he danced around the chair.”
Williams was also booked for failure to pay child support.
Williams has been charged with fleeing with lights and sirens active, driving on a permanently revoked license, DUI, DUI with refusal to submit to breath testing, and providing false identification information to law enforcement. He has four felony convictions (none violent) and eight misdemeanor convictions (none violent), including two DUI arrests; he is on probation in Lake County for DUI, refusing to submit to breath testing, and providing false identification information. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $100,000 and ordered him fitted with a transdermal alcohol monitor before being released.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.Â
Something is not right. People of the same race as Jamar seem to get more leniency and more attempts to get it right in Alachua County than other races. Is there a concerted effort to try to ‘level the playing field?’ Whatever happened to lady justice being blind and holding a balanced scale? I don’t think this is a very well hidden secret what is going on anymore. And it is absolutely disgusting.
I don’t know where you’re get your information from please explain your reasoning?
“The officer reported that Williams said the officer was trying to kill him and that he was being arrested because he was black.”
Oh the entitlement! Jamar has learned how to play the game very well… It’s almost as if he was saying, ‘Do you know who I am? I am a protected class citizen in this city!’
This is a lie my son has been in the jail for weeks on a no bond he has never been given the chance to get out. No public pretender hasn’t came to see him she hasn’t filed for a bond hearing she has done nothing. I’m pissed reading about these repeat offenders getting chance after chance and you have a person with no criminal history being held with no bond who was arrested by a over zealous rookie officer.
So historically in America “lady justice has been blind and held a balanced scale”?
In regards to how she dealt with minorities vs. the majority?
I agree with your implication, about the leveling of the playing field this effort is making our community worse not better.
In terms of Lady Justice being fair, only within the last 25 years has she even come close to being fair in terms of how she deals with white vs. black.
Also people of the same race as Jamar are just getting the same slaps on the wrists that have always been afforded to the white community.
I’m with ya when you are right, and you are definitively raising a valid point, it’s just the foundation you are building it on is no good.
Talk that talk!
Jamar needs some serious prison time before he kills someone on our roadways.
He needs the Uber app. And some rehab.
I wonder if drunks every even consider that they are risking other people’s lives when they drive drunk?
Trip…one way…let the liberals decide afterwards if he deserves a jar.
Shouldn’t have to worry about this type being a danger to myself or any family member.
Another Big Problem not being addressed by GNV CC/AC BOCC!
Get these offenders off the streets, regardless of race!
They are a danger to the rest of the residents, in particular children!
Quit talking about boards, action teams, ambassadors, and the other BS efforts to make residents think you have their safety in mind!
Lock these habitual offenders up and leave them locked up!
