Gainesville man charged with shooting from his car after pedestrian said his lights were off

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Demarco Ja’mon Webb, 27, was arrested early this morning after allegedly shooting from his car after a pedestrian told him his car’s lights were off.

At about 2:56 a.m., a Gainesville Police Department officer was notified about a call from a complainant who wanted to remain anonymous and said that while crossing the street in the 200 block of SW 13th Street, they told the driver of a gray Hyundai Elantra that the car’s lights weren’t on; they said the driver opened the door of the Elantra and they heard a loud pop that sounded like gunfire. The complainant said the car was last seen heading toward UF Health Shands.

The officer was driving northbound on SW 34th Street toward Archer Road, saw a gray Hyundai driving without headlights, and conducted a felony traffic stop. The officer reported that Webb was the driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai.

Webb reportedly gave the officer consent to search the vehicle, and the search reportedly produced a 9mm bullet on the driver’s side floorboard, a spent 9mm shell under the driver’s seat, an unloaded 9mm handgun in the center console, a loaded 24-round magazine, and a baggie containing about 4.6 grams of marijuana.

Post Miranda, Webb reportedly said he had discharged his gun while seated in his car in the 200 block of SW 13th Street.

Because the complainant did not want to be considered a victim, Webb was charged with discharging a firearm from within a vehicle within 1,000 feet of a person and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. He has no criminal history. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $102,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • The complainant didn’t want to be considered a victim??? Then why call the police???

    • because some crazy man is driving around w no lights shooting at people??

      • Not shooting at ppl, shooting at HIM. Which makes him the VICTIM

    • The complainant could be dead if the bullet had found him…this guy needs to be convicted of a felony and lose his gun rights forever…you or your loved ones could be next…

    • Probably cause they just want to move on but know he needed to be off the streets. Some people may have had a bad experience with justice system or something else is going on. Maybe they also fear the person coming after them again a protection and court order don’t stop people from hurting you.

      • This. If the victim presses charges, his name is in the court papers and in case you did not notice, Mr. Demarco Ja’mon likes guns and is quick to pull the trigger. I would not want him to know my name if I could avoid it.

        • But the victim knows who he is, if the victim thinks he’s Michael Corleone or something.

  • No history but can’t integrate for some reason, even in a crime-tolerant college town?
    ACLUSPLCDNC 👹👺🤡💩👿

  • Tomorrow UF students protest GPD illegally arresting am innocent black man, claiming besides also not wanting to be victim they didn’t want he arrested just stopped and given a stern warning and let go. Because he’s the real victim of a racist society.

  • I’ve seen many driving without their lights on early in the morning on the way to work. The only way to recognize an object is in the road is when a light gets behind it. GPD has done it as well. People don’t realize or they’re to preoccupied to notice it’s still dark at 6 a.m. It’s a public safety hazard.

That being said, too bad the pedestrian didn’t have the means to shoot back.

  • It’s a ‘cultural’ thing to be so easily offended and perceive they are somehow ‘disrespected’.
