Gainesville man charged with stomp-kicking amputee outside convenience store

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Anthony Jerome Mungin, 39, was arrested yesterday and charged with abusing a disabled adult without great harm after allegedly stomp-kicking a man outside Food Max on September 11.

A Gainesville Police Department officer responded to Food Max (1304 E. University Avenue) and reported that surveillance video captured the 3 a.m. incident on September 11.

The officer reported that the video showed Mungin arriving in a car; after he got out, he stopped and talked with the victim, who was sitting on the front step of the store. The victim is an amputee who uses a prosthetic leg to walk. The video showed the two men arguing, and then Mungin allegedly started prodding the victim with his foot before pushing the victim to the ground and stomp-kicking his upper body twice. The video reportedly showed Mungin walking away and then coming back to stomp-kick the victim a third time.

The officer interviewed Mungin over the phone, and Mungin reportedly said he has known the victim for a few months and is aware that his leg had been amputated. He said the victim had his hand down his pants during the argument and believed he was reaching for a knife. He reportedly admitted kicking the victim while he was on the ground.

The officer reported that it was clear in the video that Mungin attacked the victim two separate times “while showing no sense of urgency that he was in any danger prior to and during” the attack.

Mungin has three felony convictions (none violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (non-violent). He has served one state prison sentence and was released in January 2023. He was issued a Notice to Appear in June 2024 for a battery charge, and that case is moving through the court system. Judge Adam Lee set bail at $50,000 on the new charge, the same amount set by Judge James Colaw in the warrant for Mungin’s arrest.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Without great harm huh? Repeatedly kicked the victim while he laid on the ground. Walked away, then came back and kicked him some more.
What kind of crap are they teaching these rookie cops? You kick the s#%& out of an invalid on the ground, you showed disregard for human life.

    • @Bradford Bumpkin, Which law would you recommend charging this guy with instead?

  • Well, isn’t he just the “brave” one? Kicking an amputee, wonder how if he’d try to kick someone who could fight back? What a disgusting coward.
