Gainesville woman arrested after allegedly brandishing gun during road rage incident

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Candace Marie Naughton, 43, was arrested last night after four people said she pointed a gun at them during a road rage incident.

At about 9:11 p.m. on June 14, a Gainesville Police Department officer spoke with the four victims, who said they saw Naughton point a gun at them while her vehicle was stopped next to their vehicle in the 5200 block of SW 20th Avenue. One victim said this happened during a road rage incident, but the arrest report does not provide any information about what happened before the victims saw the gun.

An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy detained Naughton at the Circle K at 5237 SW 20th Avenue, and post Miranda, she said she was involved in a road rage incident with the occupants of the victims’ vehicle. She said she had two guns in her car, but they were both in holsters under the front passenger seat. When the GPD officer asked how the victims knew she had a gun if both guns were under the seat, Naughton said, “They must have seen it on my dashboard,” but she was reportedly unable to explain how the gun was moved from under the passenger seat to the dashboard, since she was the only person in her vehicle. She reportedly changed her statement and said she “always drives with firearms on her dashboard.”

The officer reportedly saw two 9mm magazines in plain view in the center console of Naughton’s vehicle and a live round on the floorboard.

Naughton has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She has no criminal convictions, and Judge Mitchell Bishop set bail at $10,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • 5200 sw 20th Ave aint the best part of town especially if you cross over I75. I would like to know what the other parties were doing? Maybe she was thinking showing she was armed would deescalate the situation. But now you give the other party an opportunity to play the victim. So I always say use the rule of 2. Give them 2 feet inside the house or the car so that way when you are forced to stand your ground they won’t have a defense to turn it around on you.
