GHS student on probation arrested for bringing loaded gun to school

Press release from Gainesville Police Department
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — On Tuesday, October 29, a Gainesville High School student was arrested by Gainesville Police Department officers after bringing a loaded firearm onto campus.
The investigation began after an anonymous tip stated a student was carrying a handgun in his backpack. The tip was provided to GHS School Resource Officers, who attempted to intercept the student upon his arrival at school, but the student was located in a classroom. The officers informed school administrators and removed the student from the room. When officers advised the student they needed to speak with him, the student attempted to flee. Officers immediately detained him. The student then admitted to having a gun in his bag.
A search of the student’s backpack revealed a loaded 9mm handgun. The student later told officers he found the gun in a local neighborhood and claimed he carried it for self-protection.
The student is currently on probation and faces new charges of carrying a concealed firearm, resisting without violence, and possession of a firearm on school property.
“Found it in a local neighborhood” means “stole it from someone’s car.”
First a rapist and now a student with a hand gun at GHS. Thanks for posting AC because SBAC sure doesn’t want this news out for the public to know.
Show his picture, shame these delinquents and their “parents”
METAL DETECTORS or Wands.
So thankful it was reported and no one was harmed. Judge needs to give maximum sentence and name needs to be released.
Maximum sentence is dumb ash, he’s a dumb kid who doesn’t know better.
If he doesn’t know better, why did he try to run? I can’t wait to hear back!
Not a dumb kid and definitely old to know better. He probably stole the gun as well and they should report why he was on probation. I’m sure he’s a perfect Angel. Keep defending them.
Moggy, I know education standards in Florida and the nation are pitifully low, but if he was old enough to be in high school, he was old enough to know better than to bring a gun to school. End of story.
Why was he in school. Alternate placement seems safest for all students. Students all over district in danger as long as we don’t require troubled students to attend an alternative school for placement
McGraw wanted alternative for this which is why they got rid of her. Cuz you know they care so much about students
Any children who commit crimes should not be the recipient of tax dollars for education. They should be expelled and be required to obtain their education at their own expense.
Probation?? How about expulsion?
When students get charges, they never get to walk, same thing happened to the person that burned down the bathroom.
Looks like probation was successful.
Other folks have much better luck than me.
I look on the ground all the time, and I have never ‘found’ a gun.
The Danger supported by the ACSB needs to be reported to the Governor, FBI , and FDLE. Don’t deal with the ACSB, Teachers Unions, DEI , and anyone currently presiding over Alachua County Schools promoting recklessness endangerment as a daily occurrence. If you don’t stop it in its track you encourage it. Please resign before the National Guards are brought in by your lawlessness.
Should be mandatory expulsion but…..there is that justice equity nonsense to deal with too.
What would the ACSB with all their DEI BS be saying if that kid discharged that weapon on campus ?
I have a solution…when I went to school, I never had a backpack…
All my years until graduating high school, just had a paper loose leaf folder with some pockets in it and some lined paper in it to take notes and a pen…thats it…I think a yellow legal pad and a pen at UF.
What did this kid have in his backpack besides that loaded 9mm?
I use a backpack when I go camping on the apalachian trail…
What do you need a backpack for to study reading, writing, & arithmetic?
Don’t they search the backpacks when you go through the metal detectors at school?
There should be no cell phones brought to school…we didn’t have them because they weren’t invented yet..
We brought a book we might need and a folder for each class & a pencil. No need for a backpack to conceal weapons in.
The only backpacks allowed should be those clear ones you can see through…no, ban them all ACSB!
ACSB needs to prohibit backpacks & phones and have a dress code or uniform for school.
Pastel colored button down shirt,
Blue or tan pants or shorts.
Brown or black shoes.
Legal pad & pencil or pen…
You can brown bag a lunch.
No video games or laptops..
Note: On probation….for what?
Juvenile convictions are not public. We only get information if/when officials choose to release it.
If I was attending a public school in AC, I would consider carrying a gun also.
Joel Searby is a sex offender and has stayed in jail for months, which is the correct place for him. This kid brings a LOADED GUN to school???? He should stay in jail with Searby.
