Governor Ron DeSantis commends New College of Florida’s transformation under newly-appointed Board of Trustees
Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, Governor DeSantis commended the success of New College of Florida (NCF) under the leadership of Interim President Richard Corcoran. This follows the Governor and the Board of Governor’s appointment of seven new members of the Board of Trustees and approval of $52.7 million in total funding in the Framework for Freedom Budget, which included $25 million for operational enhancements and student scholarships. Under the newly-appointed Board of Trustees, NCF is experiencing record enrollment with an increase of over 300 students this year, marking the highest enrollment of new students in school history and over 800 students this year.
Additionally, the NCF Board of Trustees recently voted to begin the termination of the gender studies program, becoming the first public university to push back on gender indoctrination.
“The New College Board of Trustees is succeeding in its mission to eliminate indoctrination and re-focus higher education on its classical mission,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.
“A true liberal arts education teaches students how to think, not what to think. While providing a classical, liberal arts education was originally the goal of New College when it was founded, New College – like many other colleges recently – began going down a path of ideological indoctrination,” said Interim President of New College Richard Corcoran. “However, the inspirational vision of empowering students with an education that provides them with the tools to be creative and critical thinkers is bigger than any of us. People are powerfully drawn to that idea and want an education like this for themselves and their children. That is why New College is succeeding – and why we are only going to grow bigger and better next year.”
Other highlights under NCF’s new leadership include:
- The replacement of far-left faculty with new professors aligned with the university’s mission.
- The elimination of DEI-focused positions, with savings of over $200,000 dollars annually.
- An increase in first-year enrollment for Black and Hispanic students – a nearly four-time increase of Black students and a nearly double increase of Hispanic students.
- The introduction of intercollegiate athletics outside of existing intramural sports by forming six teams and a scholarship fund for incoming athletes, and recruitment of nearly 150 student-athletes since launching the athletic program in the spring.
This is such encouraging news!
And I heard this morning that a lot DEI officer positions are being phased out nationwide too!
We have to keep it up!
Maybe we are starting to pull out of the tailspin that our country has been headed in.
I hope we can keep it up!
Hallelujah.
Well done, Governor DeSantis.
Common sense still exists!
When did dismantling the 5th bets public college in the nation, behind the decidedly not-woke service academies become common sense? https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges/top-public
No, that list is not for ideological indoctrination – the Governor’s goal for all our state’s universities.
Word of the day: PROPAGANDA
Yes, but worse than propaganda, an outright lie by Ron about what NC was and it’s achievements, which Ron hides. He’s a liar and a destructive one at that.
Transformation all right, from America’s 5th best public college, behind those other woke institutions – Naval Academy, West Point, Air Force Academy, and VMI ( https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges/top-public) to a trashed former state asset being run by political hacks – president is Summa Hack Corcoran, new dean of students is a long time lobbyist to the state legislature and GOP campaign tool – based on the fantasy of the Governor and his rigid ideologue trustee Chris Rufo (he of the Georgetown bachelors degree and on-line “degree” from Harvard) and supposed academic brain. Bets on them achieving a similar ranking anytime in the next decade? I’m giving 5 points and taking all bets.
By the way, NC has at various times in the past led the nation in graduates who went on to graduate schools on a per capita basis, as well as best value in education. It is more known for academic success than politics, despite our pugnacious governors attempt to ruin that which he can’t control, and is strong in math and the sciences, and is best know for independent and personalized study – a thesis is required for graduation – and draws top students.
Or at least it did!
Touted increased enrollment, including a small increase in minorities, has been achieved by starting competitive athletics and giving out scholarships to them. Gee, what unique and experimental idea! This guy Rufo is a genius! Typical of the nastiness he and the Gov practice, the best dorms, traditionally given to upperclassmen, are being given to the kind of athletes that go to a college with no facilities and 1000 students. Good thing this wasn’t an option when Tim Tebow was around!
As to increased funds being awarded by the state – true – they are losing that and more from alumnae donation, by the way, a highly successful and now thoroughly disgusted group.
One can wonder why Fat Ron didn’t just start up his dream college from scratch – the kind that gives honorary degrees to Tim Allen and Mitch McConnel – instead of insisting on trashing such a valuable asset of the state, but then he’s Ron, a nasty controlling, my way or the highway ……. well you know the noun. How much more damage can he do to the state in his remaining 3 years, starting with another proven Florida asset that the middle of the state depends on, Disney. But hey, no doubt his wide and tested experience in running businesses – and colleges already in the top 5 – gives one confidence.
Good for NCF, I wish our city would get rid of useless DEI-focused positions as well.
