Homeless high school student arrested for second time in 3 weeks after allegedly opening door of unlocked occupied apartment
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Raykise O’Neal Green, 18, was arrested yesterday and charged with trying to enter an occupied apartment; he was previously arrested on January 30 for shoplifting.
The responding Gainesville Police Department officer reported that on February 16 at about 11:55 a.m., Green was seen on surveillance video in the 3500 block of SW 19th Avenue, walking past the victim’s apartment and slowly casing the occupied residence. A few seconds later, he allegedly moved quietly to the unlocked front door and opened it; when he saw the victim’s two large dogs, he reportedly ran.
On February 20, an officer spoke with a witness in the area of the victim’s apartment complex and showed the witness a photo from the surveillance video. The witness reportedly saw Green in the same area later in the day and called the police; at about 4:10 p.m., Green was arrested and was reportedly wearing the same clothes and shoes seen on the video.
Post Miranda, Green reportedly admitted opening the victim’s front door and said he believed the apartment was empty and was looking for a place to sleep.
Green was previously arrested on January 30 for allegedly walking out of Walmart with $123 in merchandise without paying; he was previously trespassed from the store on December 30. According to court documents, he told court officials that he is a Buchholz High School student who is homeless; he has no criminal convictions, and Judge Meshon Rawls released him on his own recognizance on January 31.
Green has now been charged with attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling. Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
There but for the grace of God go I. I can’t judge a homeless high school kid who is looking for a warm place to sleep. Does he have no family? Very sad. God bless him, and I hope he finds shelter and the love of a family.
If you believe he was looking for a place to rest his weary head at 11am in the morning then you have a serious issue with discernment.
Anyone who has ever been homeless KNOWS you don’t sleep at night. It’s too dangerous. You sleep during the day.
Dawg I went to school with that kid and he would never do anything harmful
Why don’t you get him a lawyer and get him out of jail and also a place to live
A law firm will be representing him pro Bono. No worries he’s taken care of by his community now that we are aware there’s a need.
How about giving him a place to stay.. how about helping these kids before they end up in jail. Now that you know there is a need? There is always a need…🤦🏼♂️
u stupid? sleeping at night is the worst thing a homeless person can do.
I didn’t know this, but it makes sense.
Someone needs to help this kid!!
Lauren Poe- if you’re reading this, here’s your chance to shine. Take this kid in. Into your home.
Jazzman step on up if Poe doesn’t
This is going to get worse. More hunger, crime, homelessness all for greed. At least he is in a warm place tonight. I would think our DCF could help this child. Or we can be responsible for making him a criminal for trying to survive. I’m totally disgusted with this world. Totally!
Where are his parents? Stop blaming others. His parent/parents failed him. He’s still a kid and he needs guidance, quickly.
Kids age out of the DCF system at 18. He’s now a legal adult, ready or not. It’s sad to see, but I’ve seen kids put out of foster care because they turned 18, and they were nowhere near ready to be on their own. If he was in the system, there could be real issues, mentally, going on as well. I mean, people don’t generally lose their children for no reason.
The bottom line is, he’s an adult now. I don’t know why he’s homeless and there are plenty of ways that could’ve happened by his own hand (poor choices can also cause parents to say enough.) I just hope he gets what he needs in order to get on track. He’s running out of time with these criminal charges and it’ll get worse if he doesn’t get help.
This is his second arrest? Why didn’t he receive help the first time? Police just let him go back out into the streets on his own? He’s a child! What is his school doing for him?
I want to thank the Alachua Chronicle for publishing this story, because now we all know this child needs help and it looks like people in the community are going to help him get it, unlike local law enforcement
Agree 100%cIf they help him though, it makes one less possible future arrest/$18 daily head for the jail.
He’s very pitiful, and this is so sad, I hope DFC can locate a
Where is his sorry ass Mom
It doesn’t matter of his situation as sad as it is it doesn’t exempt him from obeying the law by breaking the rules. He should go to the police or a church organization and ask for help. Breaking the law is not an excuse. Now he’s in a worse situation with a record!!
This kid is using the 3 squares and a bed in jail housing theory. He needs intervention/help now – and I ain’t no bleeding heart liberal. this kid is screaming.
This kid looks like the lights are but nobody is home. I am going bet this kid’s biological parents haven’t had custody of him for a long time. I got a feeling this kid was state raised if you know what I mean. He’s probably already spent a lot time in or with DCF if you want I mean. If you could somehow see this guy’s juvenile record and if DCF was online like DOC I bet there’s more to this guy’s history if you know what I mean. I got a feeling this guy’s probably getting a free bus ride to MacClenny if you know what I mean. If the county let this guy go. I don’t want to be the one to so I told you so, but I told you so. Imagine whatever worst case scenario headline you could possibly read here on the AC and that’s this guy’s future, if you know what I mean. I not saying this guy went to Sidney Lanier, I am probably wrong and he went to Eastside and was head of the IB’s there right?
You sound kinda slow yourself. If you know what I mean?
We need another NGO to address this matter.
ACLUSPLCDNC 💩👺👹👿🤡
put him in the military cleaning toilets to start if he needs shelter at taxpayer expense
Poor young man needs help.Probably had no father in his life.We need more help for people like this I don’t know his whole story but I’m certainly going to pray that God looks over him and he gets the help and direction he desperately needs
How is that ok. Mr. Green is homeless and we put him in jail instead of helping him. Wow, flipping crazy. Why doesn’t anyone have a heart.
Do you have a heart
This is sad. Looking for all the bleeding hearts to step up and actually do something to help. This is the time to act. Hello….commissioners!?! Do instead of say for a change.
He is grown man well on the way to thuggery
Homeless people, learn a lesson here. It is OK in Alachua county to burglarize if you use homelessness as an excuse. If arrested, sympathetic people will say you should be helped and let you off. Be a better burglar than this kid though, actually take something and all will be forgiven and more given. Crime used to be crime. 18 is a legal adult, kid needs to learn it and get helped some, but the new normal in the county is excuses for bad behavior.
He is a high school student, ffs. If that doesn’t resonate with you, then I don’t know what to say. Yes, people shouldn’t steal or break into apartments, but the authorities should have helped him get someplace safe after he got caught shoplifting toiletries. They knew then he was homeless.
Perhaps poe can find him shelter with poe immigrant hotel
He’s Homeless so the country has no resources to help him! He’sa perfect candidate for McKinney Vento Program and he’s non violent! He’s clearly crying out for help!
y’all locking my dawg up when y’all rlly shud be giving him what he needs to live life. Yea he did that but he was looking for some place to sleep and it’s sad bc he never told anybody this. Free him and help him
Your dog can move in with you dawg.
