Homeless woman arrested for attacking elderly man after being released from jail to obtain mental health treatment

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – India Nekole Christian, 36, was arrested yesterday after allegedly attacking an elderly man in a Walmart parking lot and snatching $300 from him after he gave her $3; she was released from jail on August 3 to receive mental health treatment after having been found mentally incompetent to proceed in a previous case, and she walked out of the mental health facility after only six days.

At about 8:42 a.m. on August 17, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the northwest Walmart (5700 NW 23rd Street), where the 86-year-old victim said Christian approached him in the parking lot and asked him for money. The victim said he was standing next to his vehicle when he saw Christian panhandling in the parking lot, and when she approached him, he gave her $3. He said she started to walk away, but then she turned around and said she wanted more money; he reached into his pocket for more cash, inadvertently displaying part of a “wad” of cash.

The victim said Christian grabbed his hand and took all of the money, about $300; he tried to take the money back, and during a brief struggle, his shirt was ripped and his elbow was scraped. The victim said Christian escaped with all of his cash.

An independent witness reportedly said Christian approached the victim, the victim gave her some money, and then Christian “attacked” the victim, took money from him, and walked away.

A second independent witness reportedly said Christian became upset and started “abusing” and “choking” the victim. This witness said she tried to confront Christian about taking the victim’s money, but Christian ignored her.

Christian was found in a nearby restaurant about two hours later after an anonymous caller said Christian was buying food at the restaurant and had changed clothes.

When Christian heard that officers were outside, she reportedly picked up a children’s book in the restaurant’s lobby and hid in an employee area of the restaurant. After officers detained her, she reportedly asked for “my book” and went to where she had left the book; $45 was reportedly found hidden inside the book, and Christian reportedly had another $22 in her sock.

A search incident to arrest also reportedly produced about 7.2 grams of a substance that tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl, along with a glass pipe containing more of the substance.

Post Miranda, Christian reportedly denied stealing any money, but she admitted that she had asked people for money in the Walmart parking lot. She later reportedly admitted to stealing money from the victim and said she “snatched the money and ran,” but she denied physically harming the victim. She reportedly admitted to using the money to purchase drugs and buy food at the restaurant.

Christian was arrested in August 2025 for shoplifting from the same Walmart, and she was trespassed from the store at that time. She was released on her own recognizance, but after she was rearrested for failing to appear at a hearing, a psychological evaluation was performed in January. She was found incompetent to proceed on August 3, and she was released on her own recognizance with a requirement to follow a Mental Health Conditional Release Plan. The plan included treatment at Meridian Healthcare while residing at the Meridian Lodge and working with the program to obtain permanent housing; she was prohibited from having any contact with the northwest Walmart and was required to comply with all recommendations from her mental health providers.

Christian was released to a Meridian caseworker on August 3, and on August 6, law enforcement was called because Christian came into the Lodge at 5:30 a.m., “very loud and aggressive.” The caseworker wrote that Christian was transported to a hospital, but she didn’t know which one, and on August 9, Christian returned to the Lodge, packed her belongings, and left. Since August 9, her location has been unknown. A warrant for her arrest was issued on August 14, and Christian was also booked yesterday on that warrant.

Christian has been charged with robbery, tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of drug equipment, and trespassing after a warning. She has two felony convictions (non-violent) and seven misdemeanor convictions (non-violent). Judge Joy Danne ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold her without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
