GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Today, United States Attorney John P. Heekin announced that Pablo Gomez-Sarmiento, 25, of Mexico, a previously deported illegal alien, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal reentry into the United States.
U.S. Attorney Heekin said, “Compliance with our nation’s immigration laws is not optional. We welcome all legal immigrants who come here the right way and respect our laws, but for those who think they can violate our laws with impunity, my office will swiftly deliver a dose of reality with aggressive prosecutions, federal prison sentences, and deportations. The citizens of the Northern District of Florida have a right to expect their federal government to secure our borders and enforce our nation’s laws, and I intend to fulfill that duty as long as I serve as the United States Attorney.”
Gomez-Sarmiento allegedly reentered the United States illegally and was located in Alachua County in February 2025, after previously being deported in 2020. Trial is scheduled for July 22, 2026, in Gainesville, before Chief District Court Judge Allen C. Winsor.
The penalty for illegally reentering the United States after deportation is a maximum of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case involved investigations by Homeland Security Investigations and Enforcement and Removal Operations, with the assistance of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
An indictment is merely an allegation by a grand jury that a defendant has committed a violation of federal criminal law and is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
