Man arrested for allegedly stabbing his mother multiple times because she would not buy him a new car

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Manny Garcia Alcantara, 54, was arrested last night and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his 85-year-old mother multiple times and then pushing her Life Alert button before leaving with her phone and car to “smoke crack.”

At about 1:59 p.m. yesterday, Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to a Life Alert call and found the victim lying in her hallway with “numerous” puncture wounds to her chest. She also reportedly had deep lacerations to her hands that were consistent with defensive wounds. She was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Gainesville Police Department Officers responded, conducted a security sweep of the home, and reportedly found a knife in a bedroom. Officers also reported that Alcantara’s car was in the driveway, and the victim’s car was missing.

An officer called the victim’s emergency contact and learned that the victim’s vehicle was normally parked in the driveway. The emergency contact also reportedly said that Alcantara has a “significant mental health history” and that Alcantara had told him the previous day that he was completely out of money and couldn’t pay his bills. The emergency contact said that when he’d received the Life Alert notification, he had tried to call Alcantara but couldn’t reach him.

The officer reported that there have been previous calls for service involving Alcantara and his mother going back to 2019, including a 2023 incident in which Alcantara stabbed himself in the stomach.

Officers put out an alert for the victim’s vehicle and reportedly found Alcantara leaving his apartment complex in his mother’s vehicle. Alcantara reportedly agreed voluntarily to accompany officers to the station to be interviewed.

Post Miranda, Alcantara reportedly said he is unemployed and all his credit cards are maxed out; he said he spent all the money in his mother’s bank account on his drug habit. Alcantara reportedly said he had seen his mother that morning, but he was vague about the details. When he was told that his mother survived, he reportedly said, “She made it?” and said he pushed her Life Alert button before he left because otherwise he knew she would die. He reportedly said he was angry with his mother because he is out of money and she refused to buy him a new car. He reportedly said that he “hurt her so bad.” He reportedly said he had stabbed her with a knife he took from the kitchen and that he wanted her to die.

Alcantara allegedly left the knife in the bedroom and took his mother’s phone and vehicle. He said he went to his apartment to wash his hands and “smoke crack,” then planned to go to Tampa to gamble in a casino.

Alcantara has four felony convictions (one violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (one violent). He is being held without bond pending a hearing on a State motion to hold him without bond until trial.

  • Your own mother? There’s a nice place in hell waiting for you buddy, and where you’re going you won’t need to worry about a car because they provide free transportation. Have a nice stay!

  • This guy hired someone to kill his ex-wife back in 2003. He plead, served TWO (yes, TWO) years, and then was released on probation. To see that there has been domestic violence with the mother recently, someone close to them should have seen the writing on the wall. I mean, they had to have known what he was capable of, right? Let’s hope this guy gets the help he needs, and that his mother recovers and can relocate closer to other family members that won’t bring harm to her.

    • This bastard don’t need help he needs to be put away for life or shot and I don’t care which

    • The help he needs is stay in jail and once for all keep him away of people he can hurt.

  • When does the community’s safety outweigh a violent felon’s rights?

In this case, since he didn’t kill his mom, he won’t get life in prison. He’ll be out in a few years, back on crack, with access to knives.

I guess if you’re going to be a violent criminal, this county is the place to do it.

  • Now you’re adding crimes the guy didn’t comment to the situation smh

  • He get caught in a plot to kill his ex wife. No success. I tries to kill Mom but doesn’t stay around to make sure the job was done. No success. All in the name of money, New car, drugs, and wanting to go gambling in Tampa. I’m hoping Mom gets to make a full recovery. He needs to spend the rest of his life in prison. Thank God No one has died because of this guy’s action. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, more like a spoon.

  • Everyone is out of money, yet he can spare the cash for crack and for an escapade to Tampa, to gamble no less. Am I missing something?

  • I guess it was too hard to get a job, maybe even a job and a side gig? Just had to go with sharp pointy things?

Bus wasn’t good enough? I mean it’s the bus but it beats 20 to life in the pen.

  • It’s unfortunate he hasn’t fallen and cracked his skull yet.

  • Well bless her, perhaps she hoped beyond hope that things would get better for her son. To get to this age & have to deal with this heartache? I need to keep a bit of of hemlock tea on hand for my exit from this type of pain from a child. Drugs can sure end dreams & peace.

    • Very sad. Drugs and alcohol can really tear apart families. Hopefully your children will be attentive and loving in your old age, and you can pass away peacefully of natural causes.

  • Put this nut away. If you would do that to your own Mother what will he do to anyone else?

  • What does “ Alcantara has four felony convictions (one violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (one violent). He is being held without bond pending a hearing on a State motion to hold him without bond until trial” mean?
It sounds like a way to prevent public disclosure while letting him loose again. Similar to “under investigation” lawyers use in election years to prevent voters from knowing Deep State lawfare details.

    • The state is trying to hold him with no bond whatsoever. Once it is decided that he is going to be offered bond, then they have to offer a bond that he can afford – at least that is what I am gleaning from the low bonds we’ve been seeing. I think the SA is trying to prevent him from being able to bond out at all. At least, I hope that is what they are doing…

  • A real mamas boy. He still throws tantrums when mama won’t buy him a shinny new toy.

  • I think that a 54 year old man expecting his mother to buy him a car says all we need to know about this loser.
Prayers for his mother’s full recovery.

  • My comment was going to be, he is mentally deranged, or on drugs, now that comment would be useless
