Man charged with battery after allegedly punching his public defender during jury selection
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Aubrey Chase Mathis, 32, who has been in the Alachua County Jail since July 2024, was charged with battery on a public defender yesterday after allegedly punching his attorney during jury selection.
Mathis was arrested last July after allegedly attacking an elderly man outside HCA Florida North Florida Hospital just three days after he was released from prison, and jury selection for his trial began on Monday, March 17.
At about 10:45 a.m., during jury selection, Mathis allegedly stood up in the courtroom and punched his public defender twice in the face; the victim reportedly had redness and swelling under his eye as a result of the attack. The public defender’s office motion to withdraw from the case was granted by Judge James Colaw, and the Alachua County Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel has been assigned to defend Mathis. Jury selection in the July case was rescheduled to March 31.
Mathis has been charged with battery on a public defender. He has 14 felony convictions (three violent) and seven misdemeanor convictions (none violent); he has served four state prison terms and was last released three days before the July incident. He was described as homeless on the arrest report.
Mathis was already being held on $75,000 bail in the July case, and he is currently being held without bail pending a return to First Appearance tomorrow.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
14 felony convictions? What does it take to keep this guy locked up?
This one is definitely as dumb as he looks.
This is exactly the kind that goes to Grace Marketplace. It is very popular for inmates getting released (E.O.S.) If they don’t have an address, they know they can give the Grace address and D.O.C. will bus them to Gainesville.
Punching your lawyer out is so going to help your case.
Nice job there. Must be a Mensa member.
He is a rich kid who comes from a wealthy family, this guy gave me hell at my apartment from 2018-2020, he is a down low gangster, and a boy up the road. When I see this, I’m glad I never took matters into my own hands, God has avenged me.
Glad he got the tattoos so he can be identified easy…
the tattoo of tears under the eye means he took it in the behind while in prison.
That’s what Antifa & skinheads look like and why they wear the face mask so they can’t be identified…a violent bunch.
I would say that this individual has no impulse control and enjoys being in prison. We should grant him this wish.
I concur!
Another one of society’s pillars.
Now just awaiting Jazzman to come along & say something stupid, perhaps in defense of this guy somehow
Why would anyone defend this Reich wingnut. The cross on its face tells it all.
It’s about time, just desserts after quote “ Mathis has been charged with battery on a public defender. He has 14 felony convictions (three violent) and seven misdemeanor convictions (none violent); he has served four state prison terms and was last released three days before the July incident. He was described as homeless on the arrest report. ”
ACLUSPLCDNC 👿💩👺🤡👹
That day in July was the 11th. He followed my sister out of the ER and she took off and made it to her car. He came back in and when I went outside to take a phone call, he followed me out. He was just staring trying to figure out if I was the one he wanted to hurt. I ran back inside. He went down to the next door and stabbed an elderly man with his knife. Thankfully, the gentleman survived, and he was caught by local officers. Crazy, creepy lunatic.
This guy hasn’t made attempts towards the right person. His time is coming soon.
Too bad old baby cakes did not target an armed citizen.
This what happens when the family tree looks like a telephone pole. Its also a common occurance when first cousins procure.
