Man in jail since 2022 charged with shooting into crowd after FDLE returns test results on shell casings

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jeremiah Charles White, 25, who has been in the Alachua County jail since July 2022 for attempted homicide, has now been charged with attempted second-degree homicide related to a different shooting incident about two weeks before the incident that resulted in his arrest.

According to a sworn complaint filed by a Gainesville Police Department detective in December 2023 and formal charges filed on January 16, 2025, White allegedly fired into a crowd on July 3, 2022, and illegally carried a concealed firearm.

The sworn complaint outlines three shootings over a two-week period in July 2022, starting with the July 3 incident. At about 2:54 a.m. on July 3, 2022, White allegedly fired a handgun across W. University Avenue while standing on the south side of the road near 10th Street. The shooting was reportedly captured on surveillance video.

The video reportedly shows a tall, medium-complexion black male with a slim build with a goatee and a “fade” hairstyle, wearing dark-colored shorts, a light or white t-shirt with a small dark logo on the chest, all-white shoes, and white socks above the ankle. The video shows the man shooting twice across the road into a crowd of people before tucking the gun back into his waistband and running away in the chaos of people running for safety.

A vehicle that was parked at the Subway was hit several times, causing more than $19,000 in damage and rendering it inoperable.

9mm shell casings were reportedly collected from where the shooter had been standing, and those were submitted to Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for processing.

July 8, 2022

On July 8, 2022, there was a shooting in the area of the Clarence R. Kelly Community Center (1701 NE 8th Avenue); surveillance video reportedly shows a dark-colored vehicle driving westbound and shots fired southbound. Two people were walking in the area and were assumed to be the targets of the shooting. Two bullets impacted the Clarence R. Kelly building. Officers reportedly collected 9mm shell casings and submitted them to FDLE.

July 17, 2022

At about 2 a.m. on July 17, 2022, GPD responded to a shooting in the area of NW 1st Avenue and NW 1st Street, in an area that was heavily congested with pedestrians because the bars had just closed. GPD pursued the suspect vehicle, a black Kia Soul; the vehicle stopped, and all four occupants fled on foot but were located and arrested. A video from a GPD patrol vehicle’s dash camera reportedly showed that a rear passenger in the Kia was wearing all-white shoes with white socks over the ankle; that person was later identified as White.

When he was arrested, White was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt with a small “Nike” logo on the chest and had a “fade” haircut and goatee.

Shell casings and cell phone data were used to build the case

After the July 17 incident, GPD officers reportedly found a 9mm Springfield handgun near N. Main Street and NE 4th Avenue, where a passenger in the Kia could have thrown it, based on the Kia’s route. Co-defendants reportedly told officers that they had seen White with the Springfield pistol the previous day and in the hours just before the shooting.

Surveillance video on NW 1st Street reportedly shows a muzzle flash from the rear passenger window of the Kia. Officers reportedly found shell casings in the area and sent them to FDLE.

The target in the July 17 shooting was a male known to be a member of the “8th Ave” or “KIG” gang (associated with the Gardenia/8th Avenue area), and White reportedly associates with a rival gang in the Phoenix neighborhood.

FDLE reported in August 2023 that the shell casings from all three shootings were fired from the 9mm Springfield pistol.

A detective obtained location data for White’s cell phone and reportedly confirmed that he was in the area of all three shootings when they occurred.

White was previously facing formal charges of attempted second-degree murder and discharging a firearm from a vehicle; now he is also facing additional formal charges of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has a juvenile history and has been convicted of 11 felonies as an adult. He has been held without bail since July 2022, and today Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail on the new charges, pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • To teach him, as well as his fellow thugs and friends from the ‘hood that it is not okay to do drive byes, maybe 40 years consecutive, not concurrent.

    • Agreed. With work on a chain gang coupled with KP duty at Grace Marketplace on the side. Too many young men playing shoot em up around town these days. We need to get TOUGH ON CRIME.

  • Why isn’t being an identifiable member of a known criminal gang a felony in its own right?

Let’s rid Gainesville of these mobsters and begin to make the city, especially our downtown safe as it was in the 80’s and 90’s.
