Newberry man arrested for pawning stolen PS5

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Laquentin Rodigques Johnson Jr., 19, of Newberry, was arrested yesterday after allegedly selling a stolen PlayStation 5 to a pawn shop.

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that at 5:47 p.m. on August 1, a doorbell camera captured two suspects forcing entry into an apartment at an undisclosed location; “numerous” pieces of property were reportedly stolen, including a PlayStation 5.

On August 3, a PlayStation 5 was pawned for $125, and during this transaction, Johnson reportedly presented his driver’s license, his thumbprint, and a signature attesting that the item belonged to him and was not stolen.

Staff at the pawn shop turned on the PS5 and confirmed that the profile and account belonged to the person who had reported it stolen, and a sworn complaint was issued for Johnson’s arrest. A warrant was issued on August 7, and he was arrested on August 24.

Johnson has been charged with dealing in stolen property and providing false information in a pawn transaction. He has juvenile convictions from 2022 and 2023 but no adult criminal convictions. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $50,000.
