Newberry practice works to remove barriers to healthcare with free breast health evaluations

NEWBERRY, Fla. – After appointments for an upcoming HerScan breast ultrasound event at To Your Health and Wellness became fully booked, owner and provider Jennifer Munksgard, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, saw an opportunity to do more.
On September 23, To Your Health and Wellness will expand the day into a Breast Health & Prevention Day, offering a limited number of complimentary breast health evaluations for women who may be overdue for breast cancer screening or who have encountered barriers to getting a mammogram.
“We hear from women who know they need to get their mammogram but keep putting it off because there is another step standing in the way,” said Munksgard. “Maybe they were told they need an order. Maybe they don’t have a primary care provider. Maybe they’re worried about cost or simply don’t know where to start. We want to help remove those barriers.”
The complimentary evaluations will help women review their breast screening history, discuss personal and family risk factors, better understand breast density, and determine an appropriate next step. When clinically appropriate, the practice can provide an imaging order or referral and help connect patients with local imaging and affordable screening resources.
The initiative also addresses a common source of confusion for women: dense breast tissue. Breast density can make some cancers more difficult to detect on mammography and is also associated with increased breast cancer risk. The practice hopes to help women understand what their breast density means as part of their overall individual risk and whether additional evaluation or screening should be considered.
Women do not need a HerScan appointment to participate in the complimentary breast health evaluations.
The September event will also serve as an early kickoff to the practice’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month efforts throughout October.
“Our goal isn’t just breast cancer awareness,” Munksgard said. “We want to help women actually get screened. If we can remove one obstacle that has kept someone from scheduling her mammogram, that matters.”
The practice plans to continue breast health education and screening outreach throughout October under the message:
“One Less Barrier. One More Woman Screened.”
