“No street-level narcotic is safe”: Archer man charged with selling marijuana
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Larry Donnell Porter, 45, of Archer, was arrested on February 27 after a traffic stop and charged with selling marijuana; in a social media post, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that marijuana is often laced with deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine.
At about 8:23 p.m. on February 27, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Charger in the 7600 block of Newberry Road for failing to stop at the marked stop bar before making a right turn onto Newberry Road; the deputy reported that after making the turn, the vehicle failed to maintain its lane, crossing over the center line and back. The window tint was also suspected to be illegal, and that was later confirmed.
After Porter reportedly declined to answer a request to search the vehicle, a K-9 team responded to the traffic stop location and provided a positive alert for drugs.
A probable cause search of the Charger reportedly produced a backpack with locked zippers; the backpack was reportedly found to be a scent-proof backpack designed to conceal the odor of items stored inside it. A deputy asked Porter for the combination for the lock, and he reportedly said at first that he didn’t know it but later provided the code. A deputy also reported that Porter called his wife during the traffic stop and told her where she could find money at their house and instructed her to call a specific lawyer and call his boss in the morning, all of which indicated that he knew he would be arrested before the backpack was opened.
The backpack reportedly contained two more odor-proof bags with locked zippers, and the same code opened those bags; one contained 12 packages of marijuana ranging from 4.8 grams to 31.8 grams, and the second contained a digital scale, an empty heat-seal bag, and five packages of marijuana ranging from 5.1 grams to 5.8 grams. The total amount of marijuana reportedly weighed about 141 grams.
Porter reportedly has a medical marijuana card and “is well aware of the requirements” for legally possessing marijuana, but the marijuana was not in a medical marijuana dispensary container and was packaged for street-level sales and distribution.
Post Miranda, Porter reportedly denied knowing there was marijuana in his car, but when he was asked whether his fingerprints would be found on any of the bags, he said they would be found on at least one of the bags. On the way to the jail, he reportedly said, “It’s just marijuana.”
In a social media post about the arrest, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office wrote: “While most in our community may find no harm in Marijuana, we want to remind you of the many stops we have conducted where we continue to find that what seems to be ‘just weed’ is often laced with deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine. There is a mission here and it’s simple. No street level narcotic is safe. We must do everything possible to prevent having to tell a family member that their loved one overdosed because they thought they were ‘just smoking weed.'”
Porter has been charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, selling/distributing marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He has juvenile convictions between 1994 and 1997, six adult felony convictions (two violent), and four misdemeanor convictions (none violent); he has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2010. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $55,000, and Porter was released on bail on February 28.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
While selling drugs is bad, I’d challenge ACSO (or anyone in this state) to produce a case where a drug dealer was caught with fentanyl laced cannabis. People buy pot to get high, and aren’t looking to get opioids simultaneously. Drug dealers have no financial incentive to spend more money lacing weed with other substances people aren’t wanting anyway. Sounds like an old wives’ tale.
Exactly….plus had card, probably all “lab tested” and dispensary dispensed.
Yeah, that good dope
Let one of your family members smoke it.
Heck, I’d smoke it and I don’t even like weed…the probability that stuff was laced was nil
So he had fentanyl in the marijuana?? Doesn’t sound like it. He said it himself “it’s just weed”. If that’s the truth he should have never been jailed. Bad laws!!!
Sure. Like criminals always tell the truth.
I call total BS on “what seems to be ‘just weed’ is often laced with deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine”.
So, if he had a MMJ card, why was there probable cause to suspect something illegal?
Because he had it divided up in non dispensary baggies like he was going to sell it is my guess
He divided the weed for later use?
For everyone asking why he was arrested for “just weed”.
Umm, probably because selling drugs is illegal.
I’ve been smoking street weed for 35 years and never once had any that had been laced with anything. Waste of county resources arresting someone for weed. If you buy your weed card every 8 months and give the government their “tax” then it’s legal. 🤡
It’s only legal if the government has COMPLETE CONTROL of the detrubution.
Uncle Sam out here controlling the quantity on the streets to make the need higher to buy a card and further more spemd Money at a government approved weed supplier….
So a traffic stop for not stopping at the “marked stop bar” and then failing to maintain lane briefly and then they want to search the vehicle? Hmmm…..
Well, he’s black so naturally he’s a drug dealer, cops can’t ever tell the difference.
Yep, it’s highly suspect they wanted to search his car on a routine traffic stop. Bringing the dog in to make their own “probable cause” is highly suspect too.
So what gave them probable cause to search his vehicle after he refused?
The police K9…
Fail to stop at stop line
Crossed the center line .
He’s black, that’s all they need.
Sorry but I don’t believe the lace claim but….say no to drugs
Yalls don’t get it. We need our weed to function right. Everybody wants it so we needs to get it. Shame on yalls arresting dopehead
THEY PUT FENTYNAL ON CBD BUD. CBD BUD IS VIRTUALLY FREE. ADD A LITTLE. AND YOU FEEL A BUZZ.
THEY DONT PUT IT ON STANK, STICKY, BUD WITH THC….
CHANCES ARE, IF YOU ARE BUYING ” BUD” IN THE STREET, IT HAS EXTEMELY LOW LEVELS OF THC.
Who was the “specific lawyer” his wife was to call? That lawyer should also be investigated … since quote “ He has juvenile convictions between 1994 and 1997, six adult felony convictions (two violent), and four misdemeanor convictions (none violent); he has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2010. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $55,000, and Porter was released on bail on February 28.”
ACLUSPLCDNC 👹🤡👺💩👿
street price = dispensary price
Just pay the bribe to the state I mean “tax/fee” and don’t drive around with more than allowed.
Jail is bad, Prison is worse.
Anyone who doubts the possibility of corruption, error and stupidity in laws and law enforcement only has to look at pot laws. Illegal federally, legal in some states. But you can’t grow it in most places – only high rolling commercial growers have a lock on it. And it’s still largely in the hands of human garbage like him. No one has ever died or been harmed from smoking pot, ask any ER or ICU nurse how many patients they’ve had for it. Police take kids to the ER as a matter of protocol but its a total waste. Trump and Elon need to do something about this mess.
The last thing we need is Trump and Elon getting involved.
We are a nation of laws.
I agree, the offense is pretty stupid – especially considering the product is pseudo
Legalized.
However, we can’t selectively enforce laws – that causes all kinds of problems. If you disagree with it, do what you can to change the law!
Don’t tell this guy about jury nullification ^^
That causes issues itself… at $400 an hour or more, to go to trial the accused will spend tens of thousands of dollars in defense (if they don’t go for a court provided attorney… I certainly wouldn’t).
When that’s paid, the person is going to usually be deeply in debt…. Most likely potentially causing bankruptcy.. their life will be financially over…. Not to mention many companies will no longer hire someone with that bankruptcy or a non guilty verdict on their record
Change the law.
It’s a matter of
Lights on
Lights off.
Fen. & meth. are both deadly
Pot could be over used
Medical medicine pot not harmful at all.
Lights on 💡
Lights off🚫
Maybe his arrest was a set up by his drug dealers 🤷♀️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼
56% of the citizens of Florida voted in 2024 for recreational weed.
There is a new push to put MJ on the ballot in 2026. It is by folks who want a monopoly. Only big biz can grow it.
The only solution is legalize MJ and allow each person over 21 to grow five or ten plants in their backyard. There will be no pesticides used and it will guaranteed not be laced with anything. Pure clean weed like nature intended.
Marijuana is not being laced with fentanyl. Powder drugs yes but plant material where you can clearly see if there was is an asinine statement.
Your eyes must be pretty good that you can see 0.1 milligram spread out over a bud the size of a marble.
So did this scent proof backpack and vacuum sealed bags inside not work? What was the probably cause? Who’s to say the dog didn’t just alert on a command or bark or get excited?
Why this whole statement about fentanyl I read through the whole article twice trying to find where they tested his cannabis and found fentanyl to no avail.
What a misleading headline.
This can be resolved, but it won’t be cheap. Have a chemical analysis on EVERY seizure no matter what size for the next six months. Of course, the cops know it would show 99% of the weed to be unadulterated, so this would tempt them to take fentanyl from the evidence locker and spike a lot of samples. . .oh wait cops are 100% honest and would NEVER do such a thing.
Vacuum seal bags only minimally disguise the scent. My guess is the backpack disguises odors for humans, but dog’s noises are far more powerful than that of humans.
I was told by a military dog trainer years ago that one seed in a locked car was enough for some dogs to alert to the presence of weed when walking close to said vehicle
now why the hell would drug dealers put their more expensive product in their less expensive product? can’t get repeat customers if they OD
