Senator Moody co-sponsors legislation to protect ratepayers from energy-consuming data centers
Press release from Senator Ashley Moody
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Ashley Moody is co-sponsoring legislation to protect Americans from possible rate increases caused by new data centers. The Ratepayer Protection Act was introduced by Senator John Husted (R-OH) and blocked from passage on the Senate Floor by Democrats:
“I’m co-sponsoring the Ratepayer Protection Act to ensure Americans are protected from increased costs associated with new data centers. If billion-dollar tech companies want to build a massive data center, Floridians should not be left to foot the bill. It is disheartening to see Senate Democrats block the Ratepayer Protection Act from passing. While Democrats continue to play politics over the issue, I’ll keep fighting to get this common-sense legislation passed,” said Senator Ashley Moody.
The Ratepayer Protection Act would require state utility regulators and unregulated utilities to consider adopting large-load standards ensuring cost recovery for the “full, incremental” cost of any generation, transmission, or distribution upgrade needed to serve the large-load customer. It would also require large loads to provide financial assurances before grid upgrades are made and guaranteed cost recovery if a large load exits its power supply contract early.

Notice that no politicians and very few media outlets ever mention the surveillance aspect of data centers? All we hear about is AI apocalypse, higher utility rates, and destroying the environment. They are doing everything possible to gloss over the point that the majority of these hardened buildings will be used for storing and processing personal data…ie surveillance centers. Yea, they can destroy environments and raise utility rates but those are side effects, not the reason for their existence.
Election propaganda. AC should have held off till after the election.
Weak Panacea not a solution ….many other issues with data centers. Demand for natural gas will drive up electric prices regardless, watch those GRU fuel adjustment spike.
Come clean on Hope Fl $10 million theft.
xAI’s Colossus supercomputer in Memphis has been powered by a mix of sources that shifted over time:
• On-site gas turbines: Since the grid connection was initially only 8 MW, xAI brought in temporary mobile natural gas turbines (VoltaGrid 2.5 MW units and Solar Turbines 16 MW SMT-130s). At peak, aerial imagery showed 35 gas turbines set up at a combined 422 MW, drawing methane from a 16-inch gas main. This drew heavy criticism from residents, the NAACP, and environmental groups over air-quality violations.
• Grid power: As MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water) completed new substations, xAI shifted much of its load onto the grid — a substation supplying 150 MW, backed by 150 MW of Tesla Megapack battery storage — allowing it to demobilize roughly half the turbines in 2025. By 2026, satellite imagery suggested the site had grown to about 300 MW of grid power across two substations.
• Proximity to TVA gas plants: The Colossus 1 site sits near TVA’s Allen Combined Cycle Plant, and Colossus 2 (on Tulane Road) is adjacent to TVA’s 802 MW Southaven Combined Cycle natural gas plant, so even its “grid” power is largely natural-gas-generated.
• Expansion (Colossus 2/3): For the newer Mississippi-based expansion, xAI got a Clean Air Act permit for 41 natural gas turbines generating 1.2 GW at a former Duke Energy power plant site in Southaven, Mississippi, feeding both Colossus 2 and the planned Colossus 3.
So in short: a patchwork of temporary on-site gas turbines, grid power from TVA (itself gas-heavy), battery storage for load smoothing, and now permitted large-scale gas turbine plants for the newer facilities — all amid ongoing controversy and lawsuits over unpermitted turbine operation.
Hey Ashley! Do water next! How about a bill that says they can’t suck our springs dry! I’m not AT ALL worried about the global warming hoax (for how many years have the “global warming” alarmists, now “climate change,” soon some new name since the fear balloon has popped, and failed to impact anyone’s life — how many dead relatives do you have from “climate change?”). But I do worry about our water. We have the world’s best water resource. I don’t want a data center sucking it dry…
The state says it owns the water under your land..
They would love to put a meter on your well…
Now explain why you told your chief of staff to sign the check for the $10 million the GOP stole from the state to be used in a political campign.
“The grand jury stated that Moody and her office failed to protect taxpayers by approving the deal without proper checks”

Seems your party wrote the playbook, but sure, the elephant in the room is the one you linked to…

Theft of $10 million from the state, signed off on by Moody, walked through by the current GOP AG candidate, and overseen by the Governor is a different event from exceeding campaign fund limits by non-governmental entities – and pretending the big tech donors are democrats. But hey, you have to find a way to swallow this level of corruption and that in the WH. I get it.
Here’s an update with more law breaking by our overlords.

More from the Miami Herald on the Governor and Moody and Uthmeier $10 million scam, which also involved the Floriida Chamber of Commerce. Lock them up!
Since CBS News Miami published the sealed grand jury report last month, most of the attention has focused on Uthmeier’s involvement, as well as the role played by Ashley Moody, who was attorney general at the time and authorized the initial diversion of $10 million from the Medicaid settlement into the Hope Florida Foundation. The focus on Moody and Uthmeier is understandable. A few months after authorizing the transfer, Moody was appointed by the governor to the U.S. Senate. Uthmeier was then appointed by DeSantis to replace Moody as attorney general. Moody and Uthmeier are on the ballot this year.
