Terwilliger teacher arrested for DUI after crash

Staff report

Updated on February 27 with information about Davis’s employment status.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Diana Patricia Davis, 67, was arrested last night and charged with driving under the influence after officers investigated a crash on NW 43rd Street.

At about 8:49 p.m. on February 25, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a crash in the 3700 block of NW 43rd Street, where there was a car facing northbound in the southbound lane that had driven into the median and hit a tree; the driver was reportedly pushing the gas pedal in an attempt to move the car, but it was disabled from the front-end damage. The officer reported that the vehicle had substantial front-end damage, and the front axle appeared to be broken. The officer also noted that a sign had been hit.

The arresting officer reported that the driver, identified as Davis, had “glossy eyes and strong slurred speech” and smelled strongly of alcohol. Davis reportedly said multiple times that she didn’t know what was going on and that she did not know anything about a crash. The officer reported that she swayed “in all directions” and had a hard time walking after she got out of the car.

In response to a question from an officer, Davis reportedly said she was a teacher at Terwilliger Elementary; her arrest report states that she is a second-grade teacher. She agreed to perform standard field sobriety exercises but reportedly performed poorly and eventually fell, leading the officers to discontinue the exercises.

While waiting for a female officer to arrive and search Davis, the officers placed her in a patrol car, where she reportedly said multiple times that she was a teacher at Terwilliger Elementary and had to be at work at 6:30 a.m., so they should just take her home. She reportedly said she’d been a teacher for 47 years and then said it had been 45 years; the officer reported that she went back and forth on those numbers multiple times.

At the jail, the arresting officer reported that Davis had urinated in the back of the patrol vehicle.

While waiting for the breath test, Davis reportedly said multiple times that they should take her back to her vehicle or take her home; she also reportedly said multiple times that she was not a bad person and wanted to go home.

Her breath tests reportedly measured at .201 g/210L and .198 g/210L (the legal limit is .08 g/210L).

Post Miranda, Davis reportedly said she understood her rights.

While being medically cleared, she reportedly said she had been going home on NW 39th Avenue at the time of the accident and that she’d had one martini at Ballyhoo.

Davis has been charged with driving under the influence with property damage. She has two previous local DUI convictions, with the most recent in 1999; she also has a DUI conviction in Georgia from 1993. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $10,000 and ordered that she be fitted with a Transdermal Alcohol Detection device before release.

Alachua County Public Schools Public Information Officer Jackie Johnson said Davis has been placed on administrative leave.

  • Dang what happened I still want my candy..and Jayanelli said thanks for the minion glasses

  • Ms Davis I’m sorry this happened I live u I hope u get out soon and still be able to work at school I love u so so so much u deserve to be free ~zavy

  • I hope this doesn’t end her career but she needs to cut the BS. She’s lucky she didn’t injure or kill anyone

  • Must have been ine of those special gallon sized martinis. She should have never been behind the wheel. But most alcoholics think they can drive after a binge.

  • I hate seeing median trees plowed over by our crappy drivers. I wonder how many others she’s run over?
    🤬🤬🤬

  • It’s a wonder more teachers don’t have substance problems having to deal with the misbehaviors in the classroom.

  • I get she was/is a beloved teacher and I hope she gets the help she needs but she could have killed someone so she should be punished.

  • I hope the District Attorney’s office will consider all the good she has done in a super high-stress job. We help those with multiple problems and tend to hammer some outstanding people in our community only because we say they know better. Don’t wreck the few years or maybe months left in her long service to our youth that was given because you can. I would be more interested in where she was allowed to become this incapacitated and allowed to leave and drive. Let’s concentrate on the evaluation and treatment, if needed, phase of this incident.

    • We aren’t talking about a slap on the wrist second chance here. This is her fourth one. FOURTH. Three now from FL and one from GA.

  • Drunk drivers could at least have the decency to call Uber or a taxi instead of putting the rest of us at risk when they drive drunk. It’s my opinion that there should be much stiffer sentences for drunk drivers, especially repeat offenders.

  • I love this website and thank God for it. Rarely do I ever have a negative thing to say about it- but did we really need to know that she peed in the back seat of the patrol car? This woman has been a teacher for a long time- we don’t need to embarrass her like that. To me this is unnecessary. Other than that, please keep up the good work!

    • Have some compassion for the officer who had to clean that up! Just one of the many things they deal with in their work day.

      • Since human urine is considered hazardous material, it would likely be relegated to a HazMat licensed cleaning company. Well, it should be…

  • How can y’all be so damn negative about Ms Davis. Y’all don’t even know what type of person she is at all. I on the other hand knows exactly who she is as a teacher and as a friend. Let’s make it clear that I’m not condoning the drinking and driving at all. But I will say is this…She has touched so many lives in the classroom. She has helped many struggling kids and their families. If she knew of a family that was in need of clothing or food, she would provide for them and made sure they received the necessary resources. She would always give the shirt/jacket off her back if you needed it. She’s the type of teacher that we need in all classrooms because she actually cares for her students. She would never leave a child behind. She’s a great human!!!
So again, I’m not praising her for the DUI but I am praising her for the real woman she is.

  • She was my 2nd grade teacher and she gave out candy every time you get the answers right she helped me get to 3rd grade and she dressed up cool.!

  • Ms Davis we miss you and we love you when will we see you again your class was crying today at recess and they was crying class and me and the other students was helping them I remember when you gave me a lot of candyy

  • Awesome teacher to my son many years ago. I wish her well. Everyone has issues and I pray deeply for her. My son wanted to bail her out of jail. We love you Diana Davis.

  • Wow they hire teachers like this and I can’t even get approved to be a volunteer for something 15 years ago 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️
