VIDEO: Firefighters respond to fire at large abandoned home in High Springs

HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – Firefighters from three agencies worked together on Sunday night to control a fire at an abandoned 4,100-square-foot home in High Springs.

At about 7:30 p.m. on November 23, High Springs Fire Department (HSFD) firefighters were dispatched to a reported outdoor fire in the area of NW 230th Street and NW 189th Avenue; the first callers were unable to provide the exact location of the fire.

Crews arrived within five minutes and had to cut a gate to access the property; they found smoke and flames coming from the roof of a large home, requiring additional units and agencies to respond.

Because the initial report was that the fire was outside, the first unit to respond was HSFD’s brush truck, which was able to begin work quickly due to its smaller size and four-wheel-drive capability.

High Springs Public Works responded with a tractor to clear a path across the overgrown property for a ladder truck; Public Works also helped remove portions of the structure to help extinguish the fire.

Newberry Fire Department’s Quint provided an elevated stream over the building, helping to get the fire under control.

More than two dozen firefighters from HSFD, Alachua County Fire Rescue, and Newberry Fire Department responded, along with the High Springs Police Department and Duke Energy.

There were no injuries.

The fire was fully extinguished by 1:05 a.m., and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
