Walmart employee arrested for fraudulently activating $1,775 in gift cards over three days
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jaquari Tymaar Rivers, 19, was arrested yesterday after allegedly activating $1,775 in gift cards for his personal use while working as a cashier at Walmart.
A Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the Walmart at Butler Plaza yesterday morning after the loss prevention staff learned that Rivers’ cash register had been short at the end of several shifts and also received a tip from a customer who said “something weird” had happened at Rivers’ register. When staff reviewed surveillance video of Rivers at work, they reportedly saw him take a gift card from his uniform smock and activate it. The Loss Prevention Officers (LPOs) reported that Rivers did not pay for the gift card and completedly the transaction between customers.
The LPOs reportedly found that a gift card for $300 had been activated on February 9, a gift card for $475 had been activated and a $500 gift card activation had failed on February 11, and two gift cards for $500 each were activated on February 14. There was also an activation fee of $4.94 per card, for a total of $1,775 in gift cards and $19.76 in fees.
Rivers was reportedly relieved of his duties yesterday morning and interviewed by staff; according to the arrest report, he voluntarily handed over the two $500 gift cards he had activated that day.
Post Miranda, Rivers reportedly said his family was having a hard time and he was taking the gift cards to help his family with groceries. When the officer said $1,775 was a lot of money for groceries for a family of three in two weeks, Rivers reportedly did not respond.
Rivers has no local adult criminal history. Judge Denise Ferrero released him on his own recognizance.

Stealing from his employer (and the rest of us)? Sounds like an experienced Federal employee to me.
Sad, but yet another young adult with no morals or respect for others. Another community failure.
Was he able to keep his job though?
Why is STEALING and its consequences never discussed by District 1 leaders and pastors…?
