Woman on probation charged with DUI causing death after hitting bicyclist on Tower Road

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shateria Sierra Glenn, 30, was arrested last night after allegedly hitting and killing a bicyclist while driving under the influence; she was also charged with five other DUI offenses, including three counts of driving under the influence with children under the age of 18 in the vehicle.

At about 8:19 p.m. on September 16, law enforcement officers responded to the intersection of NW 75th Street (Tower Road) and NW 4th Boulevard, where one vehicle had hit a bicyclist; the bicycle was thrown into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by a second vehicle and trapped under that vehicle.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Trooper reported that Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies told him the person riding the bicycle was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The victim was a 68-year-old man; FHP’s crash report lists his address as Fanning Springs, but Glenn’s arrest report lists the victim’s address as Lake City. The victim was described as homeless when he was arrested in 2015 near Tower Road and Newberry Road.

The trooper reported that Glenn, the driver of the first vehicle, showed signs of impairment, including a strong smell of alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, and slurred speech; she also reportedly had a hard time remembering her address and her children’s birthdays. Three children were in her vehicle: a one-year-old, a three-year-old, and one child whose age was not provided; only the one-year-old was in a child restraint or seatbelt, according to the FHP crash report.

Glenn reportedly said she was southbound on Tower Road in the inside lane when a bicyclist suddenly entered the roadway, and she was unable to stop and crashed into the bicyclist.

Glenn reportedly refused to perform field sobriety exercises and did not consent to a breath, blood, or urine sample.

After the bicyclist passed away at the hospital, a warrant was obtained for a forced blood draw, which was collected at an emergency room before Glenn was transported to jail.

Glenn has been charged with DUI causing death to a human, DUI with property damage, three counts of DUI with a person under 18 in the vehicle, and refusal to submit to DUI testing. She has one felony conviction (non-violent) and four misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and she is on probation for a third or subsequent petit theft conviction; she also has multiple citations over six years for not properly restraining a juvenile in her vehicle. Although her address was listed as Lake City in the FHP crash report, she told Court Services that she has been living at Bellamay Grand (on Tower Road) for about a month.

Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold her without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing. Judge Miller-Jones also ordered the State Attorney’s Office to notify the Department of Children and Families within 24 hours.
