Women arrested after allegedly breaking window while trying to enter neighbor’s occupied apartment after noise dispute

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ceslie Renee Dallas, 34, and Jakesha Janay Haynes, 31, were arrested yesterday and charged with five counts of attempted burglary with assault after allegedly trying to break down the door of a neighbor’s occupied apartment and breaking a window.

At about 7:45 p.m., a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a report of a disturbance at Carver Gardens Apartments (1101 SE 15th Street). Both defendants and the victim live in separate apartments, and the officer reported that Dallas and Haynes got into an argument with the victim about noise coming from her apartment. After an “intense” verbal argument, the victim closed her door.

Dallas and Haynes allegedly started kicking and banging on the victim’s door, screaming that they were going to “beat” the five residents of the apartment, and the victim told the officer that this placed the residents of the apartment in fear, so they barricaded the doors with furniture.

One of the apartment’s windows was reportedly shattered during the incident.

The officer reported that Dallas and Haynes were still outside the victim’s apartment when he arrived, and the victim immediately said Haynes had tried to enter the apartment while threatening the residents. As the officer handcuffed Haynes, Dallas reportedly walked up and said, “I did it, it’s me, arrest me, not her.”

The officer reported that before he read her Miranda rights, Haynes spontaneously said that Dallas had knocked on her door to complain about the noise coming from the victim’s apartment and that Dallas had gone to the victim’s door and caused the disturbance, including attempting to enter the apartment and breaking the window. Haynes reportedly said she was there with Dallas, but she was trying to stop Dallas from damaging the property or entering the apartment. Haynes said she never tried to enter the victim’s apartment and that she was “afraid” of what Dallas would do if she succeeded in entering the apartment because she is “crazy.” She said Dallas was armed with a knife. Post Miranda, Haynes reportedly declined to make any statements.

There was no other mention of a knife in the arrest reports.

Post Miranda, Dallas reportedly said the children in the victim’s apartment were making noise and she went to confront the victim, but nothing else happened. She said she didn’t know anything about a window being broken and could not explain why she had originally told the officer to arrest her.

The victim said both women were threatening the residents of the apartment and trying to force entry into the apartment. None of the victims reported seeing any weapons.

Both women have been charged with five counts of attempted burglary with assault or battery.

Dallas has three misdemeanor convictions (one violent). Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $75,000.

Haynes has a juvenile conviction, two adult felony convictions (one violent), and one adult misdemeanor conviction (one violent). Judge Rawls set bail at $75,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
