17-year-old charged as adult with perjury in Tiger Bay homicide investigation

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kiyanah Stephens, 17, has been charged as an adult with perjury in an official proceeding, a felony, after allegedly lying about where she was during the Tiger Bay homicide on April 19.
On May 2, during the investigation of the homicide (the alleged shooter is still facing juvenile charges, but another juvenile has been charged as an adult in connection with the incident), Stephens was reportedly placed under oath to give testimony. She reportedly told an Assistant State Attorney that she was not at home at the time of the homicide, which took place at 11:42 a.m. on a school day. She reportedly said she had left her home at about 8:04 a.m. to catch an RTS bus to Eastside High School. When questioned about her activities during the school day, she reportedly said she had hidden in the upstairs bathroom of Building 15 for the entire day and did not attend any classes.
A Gainesville Police Department Detective obtained video from the RTS bus that provides service for the bus stop that Stephens said she used that morning, and the video reportedly confirmed that Stephens did not get on the bus that day.
The detective also obtained video from Eastside High School and reportedly confirmed that Stephens did not enter Building 15 on that date.
A search warrant was obtained for Stephens’ iPad, which reportedly produced a text message conversation on the date of the homicide. At about 1:46 p.m. on April 19, Stephens reportedly texted, “I can’t leave the house… I can’t go nowhere tiger bay blocked off and momma don’t know I’m home.”
Ke’mani Hill, 13, the alleged shooter, is in custody and currently charged as a juvenile; Hill is reportedly Stephens’ girlfriend. A search warrant for Hill’s Instagram account reportedly produced a message at 11:43 a.m. (one minute after the homicide) on April 19 from Hill to Stephens that said, “I shot him man. Unlock the door… Bro pls. Cover do something. Crack it just take the gun.” The detective reported that surveillance video showed Hill approaching Stephens’ apartment after the homicide, and the detective wrote that it appeared Hill was asking Stephens to crack open the apartment door and take the gun.
In her sworn testimony, Stephens reportedly said she had never seen Hill with a firearm in person, just in pictures. However, Hill’s Instagram account reportedly uploaded a video on April 15 that showed Stephens and Hill lying in a bed together, with Hill pointing a firearm with an extended magazine at the camera.
Stephens was officially charged with perjury in an official investigation on May 31, and she was ordered to be transferred to the adult jail on that same day, with bail set at $100,000.

If she had any brains she would have invoked her rights under the 5th amendment and declined to answer any questions about the matter. Never talk to state attorneys. That goes double for cops.

When the evidence is right there, on a cameras footage, and/or some measure of a recording providing irrefutable evidence of a criminal act, there is little if any defense.

Rule 1: Do NOT post a video of your face and your felony on the internet. Handing the cops, DA, and judge all the evidence needed to convict you is NOT a good way to stay out of jail.

Still can’t believe this happened with 13 17 yr old kids and now they outta school to I will be attending the next city hall.meeting to voice my concerns bout tiger bay apartments as a visitor I visit there frequently and go to dollar general often and have friends in tiger bay Apts I hope this makes the apartment staff put up even more cameras on the property people so stupid to think they have no cameras I prey for all the teens mentioned and hope there family’s are coping in these difficult times please step up the random patrols thru tiger bay neighborhood police presence sometimes is all that’s needed
