Woman arrested for throwing knife at elderly victim
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Andrea Yvonne Powers, 41, was arrested for allegedly throwing a knife at a 68-year-old victim, resulting in an eight-inch laceration.
The victim told a responding Gainesville Police Department officer that Powers had been staying at her residence for about three weeks, and although they are not related, she sees Powers as “like family.”
The officer reported that the victim, a 68-year-old woman, had a fresh eight-inch laceration on her arm, and the victim said Powers was upset that the victim was not buying food for everyone in the home but was only buying food for herself.
The victim reportedly said she came out of the bathroom to find Powers standing in the kitchen and complaining about food; she said Powers was holding a kitchen knife that was about 12 inches long. After complaining about the food, Powers allegedly threw the knife at the victim, hitting the victim’s arm.
Post Miranda, Powers said she confronted the victim because the victim said someone had eaten some cheese; she admitted holding a knife in her hand, and she reportedly said she threw the knife at the victim because the victim was holding a pot. She said the knife hit the wall.
Powers has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a victim over the age of 65. She has one misdemeanor conviction (non-violent), and Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $50,000.
