Alachua County Charmettes award scholarships
Press release from Alachua County Chapter of Charmettes, Inc.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Charmettes, Incorporated is a sisterhood of dedicated women committed to improving the quality of life within our communities through advocacy, education, service, and support for cancer research. It is a national civic organization that originated in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1951. The Alachua County Chapter was inducted into the national organization in 1975. Presently, there are chapters throughout Florida, Georgia, Washington D.C., North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.
In 1981, the national organization adopted a national thrust to eradicate cancer in our lifetime. “Breakfast For Madame” is our main fundraiser and is presented bi-annually to raise funds for cancer research and services. Through that effort, we award university/college scholarships to local high school students, distribute school supplies to students in need, and contribute to local organizations such as the American Cancer Society East Gainesville “Relay For Life” and participate in the “Strides Against Cancer Walk” and PACE Center for Girls.
On Sunday, July 21, 2024, at 2:00 pm, the Alachua County Chapter hosted a scholarship awards reception at the Alachua County Library Partnership facility. The chapter was honored and excited to present scholarships to three deserving recipients: Justice Alexander, a graduate of Eastside High School who is attending the University of Florida; Reniyah Clark, a graduate of PK Yonge Developmental Research School who is attending Trinity Baptist College; and Taylor Rollins, a graduate of Gainesville High School who is attending Flagler College. Each recipient was awarded $1,300. The families of all three recipients were present along with members of our organization.
All scholarship recipients gave expressions of gratitude for being awarded their scholarships. It was gratifying to hear them express their thanks, and they were observably moved to have received their awards and the reception presented by our Charmettes Organization.
