Alachua County January Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences programs for January 2022. These programs are being offered by Martha B. Maddox, Family & Consumer Sciences Agent, at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22712 W. Newberry Road, Newberry).

Chocolate, Savory Mixes and More Gift Ideas to Save Time & Money – January 6, from 10 a.m. to noon, and repeated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Participants learn to make a variety of delicious chocolates, savory mixes, dips, and other items that they can use as gifts for their family and friends. Attendees receive a booklet of gift ideas, instructions, and the cost to make each item versus buying it. The class includes hands on activities and lecture combined. Participants will be taking home a variety of food items demonstrated during the workshop.

The registration fee is $25.00. Participants must register online by January 2, 2022. The class is limited to 30 participants and is subject to cancellation if less than five people registered. If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee can be used for a future program. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Spice It Up with Herbs & Blends – January 13, from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This class gives tips and suggestions for using herbs and spices to reduce sodium in the diet, how to take favorite recipes and reduce sodium, what herbs and spices complement each other and can replace each other. Individuals will take home some herb blends and booklet with herb information. 

The registration fee is $25.00. Participants must register online by January 4, 2022. The class is limited to 50 participants and is subject to cancellation if less than five people registered. If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee can be used for a future program. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Adventures with Basil – January 20, from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Basil is one of the most popular herbs used in cooking. Ancient Greeks call basil the “royal herb” and many gardeners call it the “king of the herbs.” Participants learn how to use different species of basil as a flavor enhancer to reduce sodium in diets and how to harvest and store it. The class includes hands on activities and lecture combined. Attendees will sample food items and take home an information booklet on basil.

The registration fee is $20.00. Participants must register online by January 10, 2022. The class is limited to 50 participants and is subject to cancellation if less than five people registered. If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee can be used for a future program. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Adventures with Rosemary – January 25, from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Participants learn to enhance the flavor of different foods while using rosemary in a variety of food items. Attendees will experience some hands-on activities and sample prepared items and will receive an informative booklet on herbs.

The registration fee is $20.00. Participants must register online by January 18, 2022. The class is limited to 50 participants and is subject to cancellation if less than five people registered. If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee can be used for a future program. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Adventures with Mint – January 27, from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

No herb is more widely known than the fragrant mint. Participants enjoy the fragrance along with the culinary experience of using peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, and others in salads, drinks, desserts, and meats. Attendees will sample foods and receive an informative booklet on mint.

The registration fee is $20.00. Participants must register online by January 18, 2022. The class is limited to 50 participants and is subject to cancellation if less than five people registered. If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee can be used for a future program. There are no refunds for the registration fee.
