Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center seeks volunteer helpline counselors
Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – The Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center is seeking caring and compassionate individuals interested in becoming volunteer helpline counselors. The center’s fall volunteer training program begins Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, and runs for seven weeks, with training sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday through Oct. 15.
Volunteers serve as counselors on the agency’s 24/7 crisis helpline, providing support to victims and survivors of violent crime during the hours when the office is closed, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Following completion of the training, volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of nine months.
The training program provides volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively and compassionately to individuals experiencing a crisis. Training includes 40 hours of online coursework covering crisis intervention, advocacy, and the dynamics of sexual violence and interpersonal crimes. In addition to the online coursework, applicants participate in weekly group training sessions and interactive role-plays facilitated by agency staff. Upon successful completion of the program, volunteers receive Advocacy Core Training certification through the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence.
“Volunteers are the lifeline of our program and provide critical support to individuals affected by violent crime,” said Program Manager Cassandra Moore. “This is a wonderful opportunity to serve your community, gain valuable training at no cost, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”
Those interested in becoming a volunteer are encouraged to learn more about the training program and application process through the Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center.
