The Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization for the Gainesville Urbanized Area appoints members to the Alachua County Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board. Citizens representing older adults, persons with disabilities, and persons with low income, as well as State agency representatives, serve on the Board. The Board meets quarterly and provides information, advice, and direction on the coordination of services to be provided to the transportation-disadvantaged through the Florida Coordinated Transportation System.

Florida’s Transportation Disadvantaged Program began in 1979 with the adoption of Chapter 427, Florida Statutes. The goal of the Transportation Disadvantaged Program is to provide transportation services to older adults, persons with disabilities, and persons with low income in order for them to access employment, health care, education, and other life-sustaining activities. Transportation services are provided through a statewide network of Community Transportation Coordinators.
