Barbergators and GHSC present “Holiday Harmonies X”

Press release from Barbergators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Together for their tenth annual holiday concert, the Barbergators Chorus and Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus join forces (and voices) once again! “Holiday Harmonies X” is a staged radio play filled with barbershop harmony. This concert will feature both choruses, three of their top quartets, the ever-popular combined chorus, and an exciting old-time-radio-style murder mystery.

“Holiday Harmonies X” will take place on Saturday, December 9, at First United Methodist Church, 419 NE 1st St, Gainesville, with two performances at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The concert is open to the public. Tickets are available from chorus members, Barbergators.com, GainesvilleChorus.com, or at the door.

All of the music in the concert will be holiday-themed, from favorites such as “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” sung by GHSC and “Here Comes Santa Claus” sung by “Time of Our Lives,” to the rich 8-part harmony of the combined chorus singing “Christmas Waltz” and “O Holy Night.”

Instead of a simple concert, the choruses have decided to use the backdrop of a 1940s radio program in this year’s show. “This ties the songs together and will keep the audience entertained on a whole different level. It also helps segue between musical acts, since we’ll be moving entire choruses on and off stage,” said Dave Jacobs, president of the Barbergators.

Donations will be accepted to benefit Santa Fe College’s Veteran’s Bridge Scholarships. “Our charity for this year’s holiday show is Santa Fe College’s Veteran’s Bridge Scholarship,” said Jacobs. “GI Bill benefits help pay for tuition and living expenses, but sometimes they take a few months to get started. These scholarships help new veterans bridge the gap between the time they enroll and the time their benefits start.”

Both choruses have been part of Gainesville for almost 50 years. The Barbergators Chorus was chartered in 1973, and the GHSC started in 1974.

The Barbergators Chorus is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The chapter is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization. The chorus rehearses Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3146 NW 13th St, Gainesville, FL 32609. Singers and visitors are always welcome!

Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. They are also a 501(3)(c) non-profit. GHSC rehearses Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., also at Grace Presbyterian Church.

The concert is sponsored, in part, by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs.
