Buchholz Players present Sondheim’s “Into the Woods”

Press release from Buchholz Players

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece and a rare modern classic. Into the Woods reminds us that there will be times when each of us must journey into the woods, but that we must mind the future and the past.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them.

Student Director Annika Mack said, “My goal is to create an experience that sticks with both the audience and the actors as a show that is both fun and does justice to the wonderful musical that is ‘Into the Woods.’ Woven into beautiful songs and fun dialogue is the undeniable fact that our actions have consequences and we must learn from them. It has been incredible to see my peers step into their characters and stretch their abilities as actors. I think this show is worth the watch and I am so proud of everyone in this amazingly talented cast and crew!”

One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Designers especially enjoy highlighting the fantastical elements of this magical word. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

Amber Bethel, who plays Cinderella, said, “Cinderella is a very smart, deep-loving, and hard-working character who pours her heart into everyone she meets. She is very determined to spread her beauty to the world. Her confidence is something that radiates within the show. I definitely think if people do not come to this show they will be missing out on an amazing fairytale adventure that tells the story of multiple tales merged together.

Buchholz Orchestra joins the stage to provide live musical accompaniment. This musical production is sure to delight audiences with an impressive set and talented cast. Buchholz Players brought home Top Honors at the State Thespians Festival Competition under the leadership of Ted Lewis.
