“Calming the Man” brings powerful Black History Month story to Gainesville for one weekend only

Press release from Acrosstown Repertory Theatre
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In honor of Black History Month, Arcable, LLC, in partnership with Acrosstown Repertory Theatre (ART), is proud to present Calming the Man, a thought-provoking play written by Anthony Lamarr White. The production will run for one weekend only, from February 7 to 9, 2025, and will serve as a platform for meaningful dialogue on the historical and generational struggles of Black men in America.
Originally written in 1994, Calming the Man tells the deeply personal story of Daddyo and his sons, Michael and Tracey, as they navigate the lasting scars of segregation and inherited anger in 1976 North Florida. The play shines a light on the ways systemic racism has shaped Black families and communities, emphasizing the importance of understanding, healing, and breaking cycles of pain.
The play premiered at the 2021 Essential Theatre Festival, where it was featured in Broadway World, highlighting its compelling narrative and emotional depth. White, a playwright, novelist, and screenwriter, is known for his powerful storytelling that sparks conversation about race, history, and healing. Reflecting on the play’s message, White shares:
“Black History Month is not just about honoring the past—it’s about confronting the present and shaping the future. Calming the Man explores the emotional and psychological wounds passed down through generations, asking how we begin to heal. My hope is that this play encourages conversation, reflection, and, ultimately, change.”
Director Ryan Hope Travis sees the production as a critical contribution to the Black History Month conversation:
“This community is yearning for spaces to engage in honest discussions about race, identity, and history. Theater has the power to open hearts and minds, and Calming the Man is a perfect example of that.”
Each performance will be followed by a discussion session, providing audiences an opportunity to reflect on the themes of the play and their relevance to Black history and today’s society.
