CFO and State Fire Marshal Blaise Ingoglia encourages turkey safety this Thanksgiving

Press release from the Office of CFO Blaise Ingoglia
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –Today, Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Blaise Ingoglia highlighted turkey safety tips ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. Cooking causes half (52%) of all reported home fires.
Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia said, “Don’t ruin your Thanksgiving holiday with a burnt turkey. Taking just a few steps to protect your home and your family can make the difference between a perfectly cooked turkey and a fire truck at your door. What’s the difference between a well-fried turkey and a badly fried one? One’s dinner, and the other is a story your mother-in-law will tell every Thanksgiving for the next 20 years.”
Important Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips
- Caution is key when frying a turkey. Set up the turkey fryer far away from your home, and ensure that the ground is level.
- The bird must be completely thawed before putting it into the fryer. Hot oil combined with ice or water is a significant fire hazard.
- Never overfill a fryer. Oil can pour out of the pot and quickly start a fire.
- Keep children away while cooking. Hot surfaces, such as a stove or turkey fryer, can cause serious injury. Steam and splashes can also be dangerous if hot food or liquid is spilled.
- Always have a fire extinguisher. Having a Class K (kitchen-type) or a grease-rated extinguisher can prevent an accident from turning into a tragedy.
