Charmettes of Alachua County celebrate 50 years
Press release from the Charmettes of Alachua County
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Charmettes of Alachua County will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a celebratory program and reception at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on Sunday, November 9.
The Alachua County Chapter of The Charmettes, Incorporated is a sisterhood of dedicated women committed to improving the quality of life within our communities through advocacy, education, service and support for cancer research. We welcome, value, and support the diversity of skills, expertise, tools and networks of the strong African American women who make up our membership. We recognize the importance and benefits of supporting the eradication of cancer and partnering with others who share our values and support our mission.
During the past fifty years, we have aided women in need of healthcare to receive mammograms and provided school supplies, clothing, and support to students in need of services and care. We have also supported our youth through tutoring and monetary donations to assist in sports, the arts, and local programs geared toward working with troubled youth. Each year, the organization provides thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school seniors as they make plans to further their education.
Our current initiatives include addressing human trafficking, mental health awareness, and continuing our support of cancer research through Howard University’s Cancer Research Center and providing educational scholarships to seniors.
