City of Gainesville announces parking changes

Due to the effects of the pandemic, the City of Gainesville announces the following changes to City parking restrictions and requirements:

The grace period for neighborhood parking permits has been extended through September 30, 2020.

  • The division of parking enforcement will issue citations beginning October 1 to all vehicles parked in restricted-parking areas without permits.
  • Students living in sorority and fraternity houses associated with the University of Florida whose names appear on UF’s official member lists are eligible to purchase neighborhood parking permits.
  • Individuals are advised to purchase or renew permits at least one week prior to the end of the decal grace period.
  • All other parking restrictions, such as metered parking, time-limited parking, no-parking zones, tow-away zones and loading zones, remain in place.

 The annual fee for a parking permit is:

  • $115.75 for Zones 1, 2, and 5
  • $58 for Zones 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12
  • $23/year or $69/3 years for property owners with a homesteaded property
  • Zone 10 has been incorporated into Zone 2

 In the SW Downtown Garage:

  • Parking will be free of charge beginning Sept. 11 through Dec. 31, 2020.
  • Long-term garage parking permits will not be sold from Sept. 11 through Dec. 31, 2020.

Last month, the City’s department of transportation and mobility transitioned from the use of affixed decals to the use of registered license plates (“virtual permits”) for residential-use permits. Hangtabs for rear-view mirrors continue to be provided for all other permits, such as commercial, service, visitor, etc. Parking permits are available for online purchase and renewal annually from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.
