Community Foundation of North Central Florida awards $6 million in grants, announces new directors, and reports strong year of growth

Press release from Community Foundation of North Central Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Community Foundation of North Central Florida awarded $6 million in grants in 2025, supporting organizations across a wide range of focus areas and marking one of the most impactful years in the Foundation’s history.
The largest share of grant funding supported local education and mental health initiatives, totaling more than $2 million. One of the organizations supported through education funding was the CHILD Center, which provides early learning and family support services in Alachua County. Dorothy Thomas, Board President of the CHILD Center, said the Foundation’s support plays a critical role in expanding access to early education.
“The Community Foundation’s investment allows us to strengthen programs directly impacting children and families at a pivotal stage,” Thomas said. “Support like this helps ensure more children enter school ready to learn and succeed.”
In addition to its grantmaking efforts, the Community Foundation added three new members to its Board of Directors, further strengthening its leadership with deep local ties and professional expertise.
The new board members include Joseph Lowry, Jr., managing partner of Lowry Financial Advisors; Cole Barnett, an attorney with Salter Feiber, P.A.; and Ryan McGriff, president of the Gainesville-based Emmer Group.
The new directors bring longstanding community connections to their board service. Lowry is active on numerous local boards and professional organizations, including the North Central Florida Estate Planning Council. Barnett contributes extensive civic involvement through his service on local boards of directors, in addition to his legal practice.
McGriff brings a multi-generational legacy of involvement with the Community Foundation, following in the footsteps of his late grandfathers, Perry C. McGriff and Phil Emmer, both longtime supporters and former board members.
“Growing up in Gainesville, I saw firsthand the impact the Community Foundation has had on our community,” McGriff said. “Following in the footsteps of my grandfathers is something I take seriously, and I’m honored to help carry that legacy forward through service on the board.”
The year also marked significant financial growth for the Foundation. Assets under the Foundation’s management surpassed $47 million at the close of 2025, representing a 52 percent increase, year over year.
Barzella Papa, President and CEO of the Community Foundation, said the milestones reflect both community trust and the collective impact of donors, nonprofit partners, and volunteers.
“This year demonstrates what’s possible when philanthropy, strong leadership, and community commitment come together,” Papa said. “The growth we’ve experienced allows us to respond more effectively to evolving needs while continuing to invest in the future of North Central Florida.”
