Updated with pictures: Crash on W. University Avenue leads to traffic signal outage

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

On May 1, 2021, at approximately 2:14 a.m., a vehicle traveling westward at a high rate of speed, struck a raised median near the 3200 block of West University Avenue. The vehicle then veered to the south side of the road and sidewalk, where it struck an approximate 4 foot raised wall. This caused the vehicle to head westward, where it crashed into a traffic signal pole. The vehicle wrapped around the pole and was engulfed in flames immediately.

The driver and only passenger in the vehicle died as a result of the incident. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
