Deputy shoots man charging his girlfriend with a knife

Press release from Alachua County Sheriff’s Office

On Monday, April 12th, at 1:57 a.m., deputies responded to 805 SW 75th Way regarding an armed disturbance between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Law enforcement had previously responded around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night regarding a call for assistance with the same individuals, but they were unable to locate the male involved.

Upon receiving the second call for assistance, deputies were advised the male was back at the residence and armed with a knife. When deputies arrived, the male barricaded himself inside the residence. Deputies forced entry inside the residence and immediately observed the male suspect, armed with the knife, charging at his girlfriend.

When the suspect ran at the victim, a deputy shot the suspect to prevent him from stabbing his girlfriend. Deputies immediately rendered emergency medical care, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect has been identified as Jeremiah Arnold Lacsamana Birrey, date of birth 01/22/1995.

Because a deputy was involved in the shooting, the investigation into the events and timeline that led to it will be conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). As a matter of policy, the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an investigation into whether the policies of the Sheriff’s Office were followed. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the parallel investigations.
