Fire crews extinguish Windsor brush fire with help from rain

Press release from Alachua County Fire Rescue
On Friday, May 20, at approximately 4:30 p.m., crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR), Windsor Fire Rescue, and the Florida Forest Service responded to a 15-acre brush fire located on timber property north of SR20 in Windsor.
Initial arriving crews managed to keep the fire in check until the Florida Forest Service arrived and encompassed the fire with a fire line plowed by two tracked dozers. Several brush trucks from both agencies assisted with ensuring the fire was under control.
ACFR’s Unmanned Aerial System Team (Drone Team) provided aerial overwatch and critical information to ground crews. While an afternoon rain shower assisted crews on scene with extinguishment, the cause of the fire appears to be a lightning strike from a prior storm.
