Frazer School MATHCOUNTS team wins state championship

Press release from the Frazer School

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Frazer School MATHCOUNTS team recently won the state competition, placing a record five students in the 10-student countdown round.

To get to the state competition, hundreds of middle school math teams from across the state went through chapter competitions, and the top 45 were invited to the state competition. Each team consists of four individuals and an alternate, with the top two individuals from each chapter also receiving an invition to state. Over 250 students competed at the state championship, and the top 10 individuals advanced to the countdown round.

For the first time ever, one school (Frazer School) had five kids finish in the top 10 and advance to the countdown round:

  • Harshitha Guruprasad finished in 10th place and was the only female in the state who advanced to the countdown round
  • Lucas Chen finished in 9th place
  • Jason Zhang finished in 8th place
  • Armaan Vora finished in 6th place
  • Edwin Gao finished third; the top four finishers represent Florida at the national competition, so Edwin is going to nationals.

Jake Frazer, as the coach of the Frazer School team, will be the national coach for Florida. He is probably the most qualified coach Florida has ever had: he won this event as a 7th-grader in 2017. He will bring the top four kids in Florida to Gainesville to practice and get them ready.

The 45 alternates had their own competition, and Frazer School’s Isabella Mendoza took first place among the alternates.

No other school placed more than one person in the countdown round, and Frazer School placed five. Their main high school math rival, American Heritage, finished a distant 2nd place.

Coach Jake Frazer said, “I was very impressed with the maturity these kids showed at the state competition and the work ethic leading up in preparation. I am looking forward to working with Florida’s top four kids and preparing them for the national championship in D.C. in May.”
