Press release from the Frazer School

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A team of high school students from the Frazer School won their regional competition for the 2025 National Science Bowl® (NSB) this month and will compete in the NSB National Finals this spring.

The Frazer School team will join 63 teams from across the nation at the national championship in Washington D.C., April 24-28; Florida has two winners because of the size of the state. Last month, the Frazer School middle school team also advanced to nationals with 45 others teams (Florida also sends two middle school teams).

Head Coach Marc Moody said, “This will be the eighth team that I have coached and sent to nationals. Our best finishes have been in each of the last three years, advancing to the national top 8. I believe that of all the teams I’ve coached, this year’s team has the best chance to beat that threshold. With none of the team being seniors, I’m very excited for both our prospects this season and for the future.”

Assistant Coach David Buffkin said, “Our guys have been tirelessly improving all year, and last weekend it clearly showed. They were quick, confident, and composed. They earned it! We are hoping nationals will go just as well and are working to make it happen.”

The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math.

The top two middle and high school teams will win $5000 for their schools’ math and science departments. Other schools placed in the top 16 in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. The 2025 competitors will follow in the footsteps of previous National Science Bowl® contestants and will blaze a trail for students in science, math, and engineering.

Approximately 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® in its 34-year history. Each year, more than 10,000 students compete in the NSB. Each team is composed of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The competition tests the students on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The Department of Energy Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl® and sponsors the finals competition.
