Free World Elder Abuse Awareness Day presentation empowers seniors against a $60 billion threat

Press release from the Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Elder Options is teaming up with Seniors vs. Crime and local law enforcement for a vital community presentation in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The educational event, titled “Scams, Schemes & Fraud: What to Do!”, will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Gainesville Senior Recreation Center, 5701 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32653.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is officially recognized each year on June 15. The international initiative serves as a critical call-to-action for communities to promote a better understanding of the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults. Nationally, experts estimate that roughly 1 in 10 older Americans experience some form of elder abuse each year, with financial exploitation being a severe and growing epidemic that often goes unreported.

Financial exploitation hits close to home, and staying informed is the best way to fight back. This free presentation brings the mission of WEAAD to Alachua County, to equip seniors, caregivers, and family members with the necessary tools and knowledge to build a strong support system and confidently report suspected fraud.

Attendees will hear directly from a distinguished panel of local experts dedicated to protecting vulnerable adults:

  • Leslie Andrews, Elder Abuse Project Coordinator with Elder Options.
  • Justin Torres, Financial Crimes Detective with the Gainesville Police Department.
  • Judy Harden, Region 4 Director for the Seniors vs. Crime Project.
  • Kristina Young, Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) Outreach & Education Specialist, Elder Options, breaking down “Medicare Fraud: A $60 Billion Industry” and explaining how to spot predatory practices targeting healthcare benefits.

Participants will learn about the latest deceitful tactics targeting older adults, how to spot consumer scams, and exactly who to contact if they suspect fraud. Admission is free, and all community members are welcome.
