Press release from Touching Hearts at Home

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As the United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday, Gainesville’s own Marine Staff Sergeant Thomas G. Scribner proudly represented North Central Florida at the official Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Philadelphia, where the Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775.

Staff Sergeant Scribner, who served with distinction during his 12 years of service, attended the milestone celebration alongside Marines from across the nation. During the event, he met Colonel H.C. “Barney” Barnum, a Medal of Honor recipient and the evening’s guest of honor.

Colonel Barnum received the nation’s highest military honor for his heroism during the Vietnam War and remains a living symbol of valor, leadership, and the Marine Corps’ enduring motto: Semper Fidelis — Always Faithful.

“To meet a man like Colonel Barnum — someone who embodies courage, sacrifice, and the very spirit of the Marine Corps — was an unforgettable honor,” said Staff Sergeant Scribner. “It’s a reminder of the legacy we carry and the values that unite every Marine, past and present.”

After completing his military service, Staff Sergeant Scribner returned home to Gainesville to be near family. He now continues his dedication to excellence in civilian life, working with the team at Mercedes-Benz of Gainesville as a Client Advisor, Delivery Specialist, and Sprinter Specialist.

As Gainesville joins the nation in celebrating 250 years of Marine Corps history, the community proudly recognizes local heroes like Staff Sergeant Scribner for their service, sacrifice, and continued dedication to the Corps and country.
