Gainesville Modern Weekend 2024 to feature three events

Press release from Gainesville Modern

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville Modern is excited to announce the return of our signature event, the Annual Mid-Century Modern Home Tour. This will be our seventh year hosting the tour and the first since 2019. Gainesville Modern Weekend 2024 will include three events, starting with our popular MOD Talks Lecture Series on March 21. On March 22 will be the Drinks and Dwellings VIP Cocktail Party. Last, the Annual Mid-Century Modern Home Tour will be on March 23.

Our opening event will be the MOD Talks Lecture Series. Free and open to the public, this event will be held at the Gainesville Garden Club (GCC) Thursday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. The series will include a talk on the Architect Harry Merritt. Two of the homes he designed will be featured on the Mid-Century Modern Home Tour that Saturday. The second lecture will cover the Architect Jim McGinley who designed the Gainesville Garden Club. The talk will discuss the history of the garden club in the midst of the 100th anniversary of the GGC. The last lecture will explore the theory and practices used for landscape architecture during the Mid-Century Modern (MCM) era.

Join us for “The Magic Garden” Drinks and Dwellings VIP Cocktail Party on March 22 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Gainesville Garden Club. Set amongst one of Gainesville’s best examples of MCM architecture and designed by Architect Jim McGinley. The buildings boast Ocala Block, terrazzo floors and are surrounded by gorgeous views of the GGC gardens and courtyard. Enjoy an exciting night of food, live music, specialty cocktails, and a full bar. This event typically sells out. Space is limited. For tickets visit www.gainesvillemodern.org.

For one day only, the Annual Mid-Century Modern Home Tour offers an exciting day showcasing some of the best architecture of the era. The self-guided tour will be on March 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour features six homes designed by Architects Harry Merritt, Orjan Wetterqvist, Dan Branch, and Dave Henderson. This year offers a bonus stop at the McGinley-designed Gainesville Garden Club, which will be open until 6 p.m. There will also be vintage cars, food trucks, a commemorative poster by artist Alfred Phillips, and a Gainesville Modern Swag shop. The week before the tour, ticket holders will be provided a map with more information on homes and locations of events.
