Gainesville selects four City Auditor candidates for interviews
BY JENNIFER CABRERA / DECEMBER 6, 2019
At its December 5 meeting, the Gainesville City Commission selected 4 candidates to interview for the vacant City Auditor job.
Art Davis, from the consultant Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP, said it looked like they presented a small number of candidates, but the requirement for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification caused them to turn away candidates. Commissioner Gail Johnson wanted to hear more about candidates who didn’t have a CPA certification, but the other commissioners thought that wouldn’t have been fair to candidates who didn’t apply because of the requirement (it is unclear why the candidate packet includes candidates who do not have a CPA).
Virginia (Ginger) Bigbie is currently the Director of Internal Audit for the City of Minneapolis, MN. In her cover letter, she said she has previously lived in Florida and has previous internal audit experience at Shands at UF (2008-2010). She plans to return to Florida to be near her aging parents. Her undergrad degree is in Accounting, she has an MBA, and she holds CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certifications.
Michael Hill is a Senior Consultant, Internal Audit for University Health System in Augusta, GA. He was previously the Chief Audit Officer there for 13 years. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and holds CPA and CFE certifications.
Glenn Holloway is currently the Chief Audit Officer for American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, Inc., one of the largest non-profit fundraising organizations in the country. Before that, he had audit experience with several government agencies. Holloway has a bachelor’s and master’s in Business Administration and holds CPA, CFE, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor, and Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) certifications.
Melinda Pensinger is the only internal candidate. She is currently Internal Control Manager for the City of Gainesville and previously worked as a Senior Internal Auditor for the Lee County Port Authority at Southwest Florida International Airport. She has bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Philosophy and will graduate this month with a Master’s in Public Administration from Florida Gulf Coast University. She holds CPA, CIA, and CRMA certifications.
You can read all the applicants’ cover letters and resumes here. The candidates are expected to visit Gainesville on December 17-18 for interviews (there will likely be a public reception on one of those days), and the City Commission expects to make a decision on December 19.
