Gainesville’s own Dr. Angeli Akey honored for decades of dedication to local health

Press release from Aledade
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville’s beloved family physician, Dr. Angeli Maun Akey, a steadfast advocate for whole-person primary care and the visionary founder of North Florida Integrative Medicine, has been awarded the prestigious Florida Medical Association (FMA) Certificate of Appreciation. The esteemed recognition, announced July 27, celebrates Dr. Akey’s remarkable three-decade career marked by clinical excellence and profound community service to Gainesville and surrounding areas.
Dr. Akey has been a cornerstone of Gainesville’s healthcare landscape for over 25 years through North Florida Integrative Medicine, one of the region’s few remaining independently owned primary care clinics. Her practice provides compassionate care to more than 3,500 diverse patients, including local families, educators, state employees, and a significant population of retirees managing chronic conditions. Dr. Akey’s commitment to independent practice allows her to remain agile, responsive, and truly patient-centered, delivering care rooted in integrative, lifestyle-based, and nutritional approaches that target root cause and enhance quality of life. Her practice is supported by Aledade, the nation’s largest network of independent primary care, empowering her with technology and resources to deliver high-quality value-based care to the Gainesville community and beyond.
Her innovative approach extends to pioneering group medical visits, which she introduced in her practice in 2015. Annually, she facilitates over 50 weekly sessions focused on metabolic disease reversal, weight management, and cognitive health, empowering patients to actively control their health and reduce medication reliance. Her leadership in progressive primary care has also made her a frequent presenter at the University of Florida’s “Primary Care Innovations” conference.
Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Akey is a respected national and international medical educator, a former Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale, and a volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor at UF, where she mentors aspiring physicians. She is the youngest person ever admitted to the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Junior Honors Medical Program and has authored or co-authored five books, including the first medical textbook on fascia for physicians. Her co-developed FIRRIMup™ model of care is taught to doctors globally.
Dr. Akey’s relentless pursuit of better health outcomes and her unwavering support for her patients and staff embody the spirit of service that this Certificate of Appreciation honors.
