GARS hosts 2026 Amateur Radio Summer Field Day

Press release from Gainesville Amateur Radio Society

WALDO, Fla. – The Gainesville Amateur Radio Society (GARS) invites the public to attend its Amateur Radio Summer Field Day 2026. This FREE event is a hands-on, family-friendly experience that showcases the power and versatility of amateur (ham) radio.

If the power goes out, the internet pauses, and cell phones don’t work – what would you do? This event simulates real-world scenarios where radio operators provide critical communication support during disasters. GARS has a multi-station, indoor Emergency Operations Radio room, and many experienced operators are ready to introduce you to Amateur Radio – no experience needed.

Taking place on June 27th and 28th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Waldo City Square in Waldo, this free event allows you to see and join with amateur radio operators in action as they set up emergency communication stations and make live contacts with operators across the country, Canada, and the world.

Visitors can:

  • Observe live radio transmissions and speak with operators
  • Learn how amateur radio can help families make contact during emergencies
  • Explore equipment demonstrations
  • Discover how to get licensed and involved in amateur radio

“This is a great opportunity for the community to learn how amateur radio plays a vital role in an individual’s emergency communications, while also being a fun and engaging hobby,” said Mike Martell, KK4KRZ, the GARS coordinator for this event. “It’s great to get kids this hands-on experience with different technologies, and it’s a lot of fun”.

The event is open to all ages, and no prior experience with radio is necessary.
