GFR and ACFR respond to residential fire on SW 49th Place

BY JENNIFER CABRERA
At about 1:18 p.m. this afternoon, units from Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) and Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) responded to a residential fire at 1710 SW 49th Place. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the fully-engulfed garage. Crews extinguished the fire in under 10 minutes and kept it from spreading to the rest of the house, but there was significant damage to the garage and two vehicles. The rest of the house only sustained smoke damage.
All occupants and pets were able to escape without injury, and the American Red Cross will be assisting two adults, two teenage children, and a family dog with finding shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Alachua County Fire Marshall.
